Why the End of the Year Transition Matters

Students spend over 180 days in your classroom. That’s a long time for a young child. The routines, the friendships, the structure—all of it becomes a big part of their world. So, when the end of each school year comes, it’s not just the beginning of summer vacation; it’s also the end of a safe space.

Even kids excited for the next grade may feel nervous about leaving their teacher and classroom behind. For some, the last days of school can be tough. That’s why helping them mark the transition with some thoughtful, funny, or emotional end of the year read-alouds can make a real difference.

Teachers can also use this time to create rituals or class traditions that honor the past year. Think autograph books, goodbye letters, memory walls, or even a class awards day where everyone is celebrated. These small, consistent practices paired with great end of the year books can give closure and reinforce positive memories.

It's so important to remind students that they have lots to look forward to at the end of the year. Even though they're time with you might be ending, you can show them that the future is bright and full of wonderful opportunities!

Tips for Reading End of the Year Books

Here are some things to keep in mind when you're choosing end of the year books to read with your class.

1. Choose books that fit your class vibe. Every group is different. Some might love a funny story like “Last Day Blues,” while others connect more with a sweet story like “Our Class Needs You”.
2. Use books as a jumping-off point. After reading “Memory Jars,” have your students create their own jars or write about their favorite memories. It’s a great way to reflect on the past year.
3. Make it part of your countdown. If you do an ABC countdown or another fun way to end the year, include a special book for each day.
4. Let the kids choose. Put out a few options and let your class vote on what to read. This gives them ownership and gets them excited.

Your Guide to Classroom Rules

Teaching classroom rules isn’t just about keeping things in order. It's about creating a safe space where kids feel confident, supported, and ready to learn. Done well, it sets the foundation for your classroom culture, your teaching style, and your students' ability to thrive.

So, how do you actually do it?

Let’s break it down.

Before diving into how to teach classroom rules, you need a plan. Think of this as your personal guidebook to kicking off your classroom procedures with clarity and confidence.

Start by deciding on a reasonable number of core classroom rules. For younger students, keep it simple—three to five specific rules is usually just right. You want your entire class to understand them, remember them, and use them. For example:

• Be kind.
• Listen when others are speaking.
• Take care of our things.
• Try your best.

Next, think through your procedures and routines. Each of these have lots of mini expectations that you will have to teach and practice when you think about how to teach classroom rules. For example:

• Walk, don't run to get in line.
• Keep your hands to yourself in line.
• No talking when we walk through the hall in our line.

Once you have your rules decided on and your routines thought through, then you're ready to teach them! Let's walk through the best way to break it down for students in a fun and engaging way that they won't forget!

How to Teach Classroom Rules

Teaching class rules isn’t just reading a list aloud and hoping it sticks. It takes planning, modeling, and practice. When we're thinking about how to teach classroom rules, we have to remember that it's not a “one and done” process. It takes consistent review and practice, especially at the beginning of the year for students to learn all their classroom rules, and then be able to follow them.

It's a good idea to break up your rules and procedures over the first couple of weeks of school, in order to help students absorb it all. Here is how I recommend you go about teaching your rules and routines:

1. Introducing Your Core Rules

When thinking of how to teach classroom rules, it's best to start by introducing your main set of rules. These are core values that apply no matter what time of day it is.

You can do this with an anchor chart (which doubles as a great visual to leave in the classroom all year round). This anchor chart template is available here.

Another great way to introduce these classroom rules is with a classroom promise. In this activity, students brainstorm what they think the rules should be. Then you reveal your rules, connecting them to the ideas that they shared. Finally, each student decorates a handprint or makes a signature to add around the rules, showing that they promise to try their best to follow the rules of the classroom.

Class promises are a great way to start a conversation about what the classroom should look like and feel like, and to help students feel like they are part of their new classroom. You can get this class promise template right here for free.

You can then use a fun craft to review these rules after you've taught them. Remember – it's all about repetition, repetition, repetition! This craft template is available here.

2. Getting to Know the Classroom

The first week of school is a great time for a classroom tour. Students need to feel comfortable and welcome in their new classroom before we can start teaching them a bunch of new expectations. We want to help them learn where everything lives: pencils, tissues, turn-in bins, classroom library. They also need to learn which parts of the classroom are used for daily classroom routines.

A fun way to do this is to create a large map of the classroom. After giving students a tour, invite them to label the map with sticky notes to show where different items are stored and what different parts of the room are used for. You can get this anchor chart template right here.

Another fun activity to learn the classroom layout is to do a scavenger hunt. Give students a list of items to check off as they find. This is an interactive and engaging way to review after a classroom tour. You can get this editable scavenger hunt template right here.

3. Introducing Classroom Materials

Introducing classroom materials is an important part of how to teach classroom rules. Start right away, and don't be afraid to take time with this. Teaching students how to care for classroom materials is a worthwhile investment of your time at the beginning of the school year. You'll want to make expectations clear and review them often.

Here's how you can teach these expectations: Every time you give students a new classroom item, give them a chance to explore it and talk together about how it should be used.

Create a visual and have students help fill in the correct way to use an item. Add each new item to the chart as more are introduced. Make sure to give lots of reminders every time a material is used during these first few weeks. Students won't remember it all the first time! You can get these anchor chart templates right here.

A great way to review these expectations for caring for materials is to create a flipbook. This is a fun craft that helps students take ownership for the correct way to handle their classroom materials. You can get this flipbook template right here!

4. Procedures and Routines

Procedures and routines account for most of our rules, so they are an important part of how to teach classroom rules. You'll also want to start teaching a few procedures and routines each day. Make a schedule so you know which routines you're going to teach on each day. Go over all the steps of the routine, and then have your students practice. Some other fun ways to practice are:

• Demonstrate the routine, but do some things incorrectly. Invite your students to correct you.
• After you explain the steps, ask for a few volunteers to demonstrate for the class – students love getting up and being the example!
• Have the whole class practice and then rate themselves, giving feedback on how they could improve the routine.
• If it's a transitioning routine, you can time the class. Challenge them to beat their time and get faster and smoother at transitioning (Just make sure they know not to run!)

For a routine or procedure that is especially tricky or that students need to do independently, consider creating a visual for them to refer to in the classroom. To help students get used to their new routines, you can have them create a daily schedule. This is a fun way for them to remember the parts of the day and feel more comfortable with their new daily rhythm. You can get the template for this schedule booklet right here!

5. Practicing A Listening Body

Let's talk about how to teach classroom rules for when you're teaching and students are learning. You will want to spend extra time going over expectations during lessons. A great way to do this is to talk about using our “listening body”.

A “listening body” is a visual and physical cue for what active listening looks like, and it covers most of the rules you would need to teach for lesson times:

• Eyes on the lesson
• Ears listening
• Mouth quiet
• Hands to yourself
• Body quiet and comfortable

Now, I like to make this more inclusive by teaching multiple choices for what this might look like. You can talk about how some students may need a fidget to keep their hands to themselves. Some students might sit criss-cross, others might need a chair, or to sit on their knees.

You can decide what options work for your classroom, but it's important to emphasize that not everyone's listening body will look the same.

Then you can have students reflect on what their bodies need with this independent craft. This activity encourages students to take ownership of being able to pay attention during lesson times. You can get this craft template right here!

Build a Strong Classroom Community

Teaching rules isn’t just about avoiding disruptive behaviors. It’s about building a classroom where students feel like they belong.

We do this by making our rules clear and consistent, with plenty of opportunities for practice and review.

Also, don’t underestimate the power of positive reinforcement. Notice and name the good behavior you see: “You lined up so quietly, good job following our hallway rule!” The more students see that you will give your energy and attention to following the rules, the less likely they'll be tempted to act out.

Emphasizing teamwork can also go a long way in helping students follow rules consistently. When students feel like they’re part of a team, it motivates them to do their personal best.

Teaching Classroom Rules

For elementary students, it’s not just about doing good deeds but also about learning how to build connections and make the world a better place, one small act at a time.

15 Kindness Ideas For Students

Day 1: Being A Good Friend

This anchor chart is a wonderful visual to help students understand actions that make them a good friend. Invite students to brainstorm how to be a good friend, and how not to be a good friend. Often times, including these negative traits can be helpful for students, who need things laid out explicitly.

This is one of my favorite children's books for teaching students the importance of kind acts and inclusiveness. Each Kindness is a poignant story of a new student who isn't welcomed into the classroom. The main character in the story must then examine her own actions and reflect on how she didn't make a kind choice.

This next Kindness Week idea for students is a kind friend flipbook. This is a great way to help students remember ways to be a kind friend. It offers them specific strategies for being kind, which are concrete ways they can practice kindness in their school community.

Day 2: Using Kind Words

Remembering to use kind words can be tricky for our students! Use this class anchor chart to help students brainstorm kind things they can say to their classmates. It's so helpful for students to have examples of phrases they can use to be kind – you'll definitely be hearing those words around your classroom in no time!

Writing kindness notes with positive messages is one of my favorite Kindness Week ideas for students. This kindness craft activity invites students to write kindness notes to their peers using these kindness note templates. There are lots of ways you can organize this:

You can have students write to whoever they want to in the class, or assign them a student to make a kind note for. You can make them anonymous, or let students sign who they're from. You can do this once, or make the notes available at a certain time of day for students to write again and again. (One recommendation: It's best if they turn them into you, and you deliver them – this way you can make sure everyone is receiving at least one, and you can preview them if you are worried students might abuse this work and include a not nice message.)

The children's book The Smallest Girl In The Smallest Grade provides a good illustration of how powerful kind words can be. In this story, a girl stands up for other students aren't being treated kindly. She uses her kind words to help them – this is a great story for empowering students use their words to help their school community.

Day 3: Kind Actions

A kindness chain is one of the most fun Kindness Week ideas for students, and it gets the whole class involved! Observe your students and mentally note anytime you see a random act of kindness. Choose a time of day to recognize students and share what you saw. For each act of kindness you saw, add a paper link to your kindness chain. Your students will love watching your kindness chain grow! (You can also have students share any kind acts they witnessed!)

Day 4: Being A Bucket Filler

If you've never read Have You Filled A Bucket Today? then this is your sign to do it now! The bucket filler books are one of my favorite kindness week ideas for students – they have such a wonderful metaphor for kind deeds and unkind deeds and how they affect one another. It's a great illustration that students can really relate to and understand when it comes to talking about kindness.

Day 5: Celebrating Kindness

I absolutely LOVE catching students being kind, so this is something I actually do all year long, but it's also perfect for Kindness Week ideas for students. This anchor chart is filled with positive traits of kindness. Throughout the day, make a mental note when you notice a student acting out one of these positive traits. Then pick a time of day to share what you noticed, and invite the students to place a sticker under the word that they showcased. Students will love being recognized for their kind acts!

This is another kindness challenge that becomes a kindness bulletin board for your classroom. Each day, students choose a random act of kindness from a paper heart. Once they've completed their random act of kindness, they put it up on the bulletin board. At the end of the week, your bulletin board will be full of different acts of kindness!

Tips For Getting Students Involved

Involving students in planning and executing Kindness Week activities is the best way to ensure engagement. Here’s how:

Invite Students to Lead

Give students leadership roles by assigning them to plan specific activities or projects. For example:

• A group could organize a “Kindness Bingo Challenge” with tasks like helping a peer, sharing a toy, or writing a letter to a family member.
• Another could design a “Day of Kindness” schedule to implement small kindness projects throughout the school day.

Use Small Groups

Divide the class into small groups to work on different kindness projects, such as creating thank-you cards for school staff or collecting donations for an animal shelter. This approach helps students develop teamwork and encourages collaboration.

Incorporate SEL Lessons

Design an SEL-themed lesson plan that focuses on empathy and the “ripple effect” of kindness. Discuss how one random act of kindness can inspire others and create a chain reaction of positivity. Planning For The End Of The School Year

I know, I know – it can be hard to even think about end of the year classroom party ideas right now! The end of the school year can get so busy – report cards, parent conferences, assessments, summer plans, cleaning up the classroom… I mean, the list can get scary at this time of year!

But planning your end of the school year party should be a fun task – not a burden! So let's make it easy peasy, and dare I say… fun!

Before you choose one of these end of the year classroom party ideas, there are a few basic choices that can make it easier to organize your planning:

• Have a student vote – If you're having trouble deciding, pick your top three ideas and let your students vote! They'll love being a part of the process, and then you don't have to worry that you're picking something that they'll love.
• Parents or students only – Decide if you want to invite parents/families to your celebration or keep it students only. Or you might have parents come for part of the day only and celebrate with just your students for another part of the day.
• One day or multiple – You may end up having multiple celebrations depending on how much you like to celebrate the end of the year, what your school has scheduled, and how much you want to spread it out.

Answering these first questions can help a lot you when you're first starting to plan out and organize your end of the school year classroom celebrations. Once you've got these basics set, you're ready to dive into these end of the year classroom party ideas and see which one will be the best fit for you and your students this year!

End of the Year Classroom Party Ideas

These end of the year classroom party ideas have something for everyone – whether you want to keep things simple, or you want to go all out! And if you're really ready to party – you can do more than one of these ideas on different days during last week. I mean, why not??

But remember, our students don't need us to burn ourselves going over the top. The smallest things mean SO much to them. You've poured yourself into their growth all year long, so don't push yourself too hard at the end – do what feels workable for you!

So let's dive into these 9 end of the year classroom party ideas, starting with my personal favorite… virtual field trips!!!

Virtual Field Trip Party

Virtual field trips are SUCH a fun way to celebrate with your students. I love using them all year long for holiday and class celebrations. But doing them for your end of the school year party can be an extra special treat.

The best part of these is that they require very little prep from you! All the fun is already planned within the field trip, so these are a great choice if you want an end of the school year party that won't require hours of your time to set up and manage.

Disneyland Virtual Field Trip

Your students will be SO excited when you tell them you're going to Disneyland for your class party! This virtual field trip has lots of fun rides and shows to see, plus sites from the park, and some crafts to do together too – always a huge hit.

Making Memories

If you want to help your students remember and celebrate the year you've had together, there are lots of fun ways to do it. You can create a whole class party around making memories together. Here are some of my favorite end of the year classroom party ideas for creating memories together:

Memories Craft Party

There are sooo many wonderful classroom memories crafts, you could easily create a whole party themed around creating memories!

A couple ways you could do this – set up tables with different memory crafts and let your students choose which one they want to do – like a choose your own craft party! Or, you could have the whole class do one each day the last week of school!

Here are a few of my favorite memories crafts:

• Yearbook: Create a little yearbook for each student, and have them draw or write in each other's books. This is a fun way to help them remember their classmates from that year. I have a template for a simple student yearbook in my TPT store right here!
• Memories book: Each student creates a little book with their favorite memories from the year. Each page can have a different prompt – maybe one page is about their favorite recess game that year, and another is about their favorite subject, and another is about their favorite classroom celebration – you get the idea! The cute polaroid memories book pictured above is in my TPT store right here!
• Memories flower: This craft is always a favorite, and they look so sweet displayed in the classroom the last week of school! Each flower petal is a different favorite memory – I like to make these large so they are a wowwing display. You can get this craft template in my TPT store right here!

Photo Booth Party

This is one of the most fun end of the year classroom party ideas – your students will LOVE the chance to take photos with their friends! This is such a fun surprise for your students. Here's how to make it happen:

• Set up 3-4 photo booths in your classroom. There are some great DIY backdrop ideas on Pinterest. You could make each one a different theme, such as beach, outer space, animals, etc. Add some props on a table for students to choose from for each photo booth.
• Get 3-4 cameras – one for each photo booth. Old phones or iPads work great. Set each one up on a tripod in front of the photo booth.
• When it's time to party, let students go from booth to booth and take their photos with their friends. Always good to set some ground rules to keep the chaos at bay – for example, create a clear line where students have to wait their turn for each booth.
• You can also assign students to be photographers for part of the time! Or, just have the next person in line be the photographer.
• When the photo-taking is done, there are lots of fun things you can do with the photos! Here are some fun ideas:
  • Make a slideshow to show your class or email to them after school has ended.
  • Create a little yearbook and have it printed for each student (definitely get some parent contributions so you don't have to pay for all that printing!)
  • Let each student pick one or two photos that you'll have printed, and have them decorate a frame for it.

While this end of the year classroom party ideas takes a lot more work from you, it definitely creates some fantastic memories for your students!

T-Shirt Making Party

A T-shirt making party is another end the year classroom celebration with a fun craft that also creates a wonderful keepsake. I've done a class t-shirt for years with my students, and I see them wearing it all the time afterward!

Each student needs a plain white T-shirt. I usually asked parents to bring one in, and I always had some parents who brought in T-shirt packs so I had plenty of extras. Here's how I like to organize our T-shirt party:

1. Put a piece of construction paper inside the T-shirt so nothing bleeds through. Set up the T-shirts at each student's table seat.
2. Let each student choose a Sharpie or fabric marker. Students start at their chair then everyone rotates around the classroom to sign the back of each shirt until they've signed them all!
3. Have tables set up with fabric paints and paintbrushes. It's awesome to get a couple parent volunteers so that each table has an adult helping students share the paints and the brushes.
4. Students can paint whatever (school appropriate) design they want on the front of the shirt – something that reminds them of the school year they've had.
5. Leave the shirts in the sun to dry. They usually need 24 hours to dry completely, depending on what kind of paint you used.
6. Students get to wear their shirts on the last day of school!

Theme Days

Theme days are one of the most fantastic end of the year classroom party ideas to make your students feel extra loved. These often require a little extra prep from you, but are always a big hit with your students.

The possibilities for theme days are endless! Carnival, jungle, outer space, movies… but here are two of my favorites to make an end of the school year class party extra special:

ABC Countdown

One popular end of the school year celebration idea is the ABC Countdown. This idea turns each day of the last month into a special celebration based on a different letter of the alphabet.

Think “A” for Art Day to “Z” for Zoom Around the Room, it adds excitement and fun to the classroom routine. It's not just about waiting for summer break; it's about enjoying each day and making great memories with classmates and teachers. Whether it's dressing up for Wacky Wednesday or trying cool science experiments, the ABC Countdown makes the end of the school year a blast.

And of course you still have other things you need to teach during the last 26 days! You can make this a small block in the afternoon until the last week, when you may have more time to devote to festivities.

Some ideas might be:

• A – Art Day: Spend the day creating colorful masterpieces.
• B – Beach Day: Bring in beach towels and sunglasses for a relaxed, beach-themed day.
• C – Crazy Hat Day: Let students show off their wackiest headgear.
• D – Dance Party: Crank up the music and let loose with a dance party.
• E – Experiment Day: Conduct fun and interactive science experiments.
• F – Field Day: Organize outdoor games and activities for some fun in the sun.
• G – Game Day: Play board games, card games, or outdoor games together.
• H – Hat Day: Wear your favorite hats to school.
• I – Ice Cream Social: Enjoy delicious ice cream treats with classmates.
• J – Joke Day: Share jokes and funny stories to bring laughter to the classroom.
• K – Kindness Day: Perform acts of kindness for classmates and teachers.
• L – Lego Day: Build and create with everyone's favorite building blocks.
• M – Movie Day: Watch a movie or have a movie marathon with popcorn.
• N – Nature Walk: Take a stroll outside and explore nature together.
• O – Outdoor Picnic: Have a picnic lunch outside with classmates.
• P – Pajama Day: Wear pajamas to school for a cozy and relaxed day.
• Q – Quiet Reading: Spend time reading books quietly or listening to stories.
• R – Relay Races: Organize relay races and other fun outdoor activities.
• S – Sports Day: Play various sports and games together.
• T – Talent Show: Showcase talents and skills with a classroom talent show.
• U – Under the Sea Day: Dive into ocean-themed activities and crafts.
• V – Video Call Day: Connect with a class from another school via video call.
• W – Water Day: Have water-themed games and activities to cool off.
• X – eXtra Special Day: Plan a surprise activity or treat for the class.
• Y – Yearbook Signing: Exchange yearbooks and memories with classmates.
• Z – Zoom Into Summer: Have a final party with a movie or virtual field trip on the last day.

Glow Party

A glow party is a theme that your students will definitely love! Think… dark, neon lights, like a rave but for kids! There are lots of activities you can do for glow day, but here are a few ideas:

• If you want to keep it simple, you just need glow sticks, glow necklaces, and some music! Let your students have a dance party in the dark with their glowing accessories. You can play freeze dance, musical chairs – any basic game suddenly becomes special when it's glow day!
• If you have access to black lights, then you can really go all out! Set up a few black lights in your classroom, and decorate the tables with neon accessories, so your students will see them when they come in! They have neon cups and plates, neon tape, neon party glasses – the possiblities are endless! You can set up different neon games in parts of the classroom, let students eat from neon plateware and utensils, and have a glow dance party!

Easy Party Ideas

If you are looking to keep things simple, then I am right there with you. Trust me, your students will LOVE any of these end of the year classroom party ideas. These are tried and true, and will make a sweet ending to your school year.

Parent Potluck

This might sound daunting, but if you delegate it properly, you will have very few tasks that fall to you. Here's how to create an end of the school year parent potluck party that is stress-free:

1. Invite your families to join you for a potluck lunch. Set a clear start and stop time (1 – 1.5 hours is plenty).
2. Create an online sign up (I always use Sign Up Genius). Include places to sign up for party set up, main dishes, veggie/fruit dishes, dessert dishes, drinks, cups and napkins and silverware, and party clean up.
3. Make sure you follow up with parents so that the important slots all get filled – especially party set up and clean up!
4. On the day of the potluck, take your students out to the playground and leave the set up parents in charge – they can move the tables, organize the food, and set up the places to eat – you don't have to do any of that!
5. When set up is ready and it's time to start eating, you can say hello with a small speech. If you want to have students do some sort of presentation you can, but that's totally optional!
6. Then everyone eats together! I usually let kids play outside when they're done eating so that the room doesn't turn into a zoo.
7. It's good to always have a clear ending time, so that parents know when to leave – and sometimes they take their child with them so you have a small class for the rest of the day!

PJ's, Movie, and a Treat

This is my go-to formula for a stress-free classroom party. Kids seem to love any excuse to wear their pajamas to school, and you can throw in letting them bring a stuffie to make it extra fun!

Watching a movie is perfect for the end of the year because it leaves you free to start organizing and putting things away in the classroom. Finish off with some yummy cookies or ice cream, and you can bet your students will go home extra happy. Your only prep is picking a movie and picking up a treat (or better yet — have some parent volunteers take care of bringing in the special treat!)

Awards Ceremony

You can create a simple, yet meaningful awards ceremony for students as an end of the year class celebration. And it's up to you how fancy you want to make it! Some fun awards ceremony ideas…

• Paper Plate Awards – these are easy to whip out one night while watching a movie on Netflix. Think of a fun way to honor each student, and decorate a paper plate with each phrase. Some ideas might be “always a good sport”, “looking on the bright side”, “a friend to all”, “never give up”, “you make us smile”, etc.
• Graduation Certificates – you can also make your own “graduation” certificates for each student to show they've made it through your class! Simply type in each student's name into a certificate template and print them out.
• Red Carpet Ceremony – if you want to get super fancy, you can create a little ceremony where students walk up a red carpet to receive their award – always a fun addition!

End Of The Year Classroom Party

Choosing Children's Books About Mindfulness

Mindfulness is such an important tool for students to use. There are so many benefits to mindfulness in the classroom, but there just aren't that many resources available yet that are made just for students. (That's why I created these Mindfulness Lessons!)

The good news is, there are more and more children's books about social emotional learning available these days. But it can be hard to know which ones are the best for your students…

How should you go about choosing children's books about mindfulness? Here are a few tips:

• Look for books that have clear strategies that students can practice themselves. Giving children explicit examples of mindfulness that they can use in their own lives is so helpful!
• Look for characters that your students can relate to. It's so important to expose children to characters that are like themselves (but also important to expose them to characters that are different – we need a mix of windows and mirrors!)
• Choose books that have full class exercises you can do together! These are great for brain breaks and transitions between lessons, and create an easy way to squeeze some mindfulness activities into the school day.
• Find books that you could weave into your academic subjects. So often, we can create a writing response or some comprehension work around any read aloud. That makes it so much easier to include social emotional learning lessons as a natural part of the school day – perfect!

Social Emotional Learning Topics Your Students Need

Social emotional learning for the classroom sounds great and all, but how can we teachers actually put it into action? There are SO many SEL topics out there, so I've done the work for you and selected the ones that students will most benefit from in a classroom setting.

While there are many other topics that would still be valuable, these social emotional learning lessons focus on skills that will help students thrive at school. These are the ideas that will help students improve academically, manage their behaviors, interact positively with faculty and peers, and build their self esteem as learners.

Here are 7 essential topics for social emotional learning activities that we can teach and reinforce with students. (Click each topic heading to jump to activities for that topic!)

1. Growth Mindset: Growth mindset is so important for learning, as it helps students tackle challenges and build the belief that they can learn new things. Social emotional learning activities with growth mindset in mind are a must-have for the classroom.
2. Social Skills: Social skills help students self-regulate in the classroom and interact with their peers in a positive way. Focusing on social skills saves us valuable time in the long run, since it helps students build more independence and need less help from teachers when problems come up.
3. Friendship Skills: Conflict resolution, making new friends, being inclusive, and practicing kindness are all important friendship skills that students need to feel happy and safe at school.
4. Mindfulness: Studies have shown that mindfulness can reduce stress and increase happiness with all people, and that includes kids too! Mindfulness practices are also a great way to help your students find calm after an exciting task.
5. Celebrating Diversity: Our classrooms are full of students who come from all different backgrounds. They bring a variety of life experiences to school with them, and it's so important we honor those differences, and also teach students to appreciate those differences in each other.
6. Self-Love: Student self esteem can be a huge roadblock in learning and cooperating. We can help students practice self-love and positive mental health skills.
7. Gratitude: Practicing gratitude actually makes us happier! And gratitude can make our classroom more positive spaces.

Social Emotional Learning Activities For The Classroom

I'm sharing some of my all-time favorite social emotional learning activities for the classroom. The ideal situation would be to have one day a week with a time block set aside for SEL lessons. However, I know this can be hard to swing for some teachers.

Fear not – these activities can be squeezed into your morning meeting, a transition between lessons, or even an add on to a read aloud. You don't have to get fancy!

If you start to get overwhelmed at the thought of researching, planning, and prepping social emotional learning lessons, just remember – there are lots of great resources out there already! (And that's why I created this year long Social Emotional Learning Curriculum – that you don't have to waste your time reinventing the wheel.)

Growth Mindset Activities

Growth mindset is a great place to start with your social emotional learning activities. Here are a couple of my absolute favorite activities to get you started!

Fixed Vs. Growth Mindset

Teaching students to understand the differences between a fixed versus growth mindset is the beginning of building a strong growth mindset. This social emotional learning activity is a must-have for teachers who want to help their students build persistence.

This anchor chart is a great visual for students as they are learning about fixed mindset and growth mindset.

Positive Self Talk

Learning to speak kindly to ourselves is a huge SEL topic. Luckily, there are many amazing social emotional learning activities centered on this very concept. Help your students understand the importance of speaking kindly to our minds by giving concrete examples, modeling frequently, and doing fun social emotional learning activities like this cute fortune teller to help students put it into practice!

Social Skills Activities

Social skills are so important to academic success, yet teachers rarely get the time or support they need to be able to teach them. Here are some engaging social skill activities that you can do with your class anytime to start their learning:

Self-Regulation

A student's ability to self regulate will contribute a lot to their ability to succeed in the classroom. This group activity is a great way to give students concrete examples of ways they can recenter themselves when big emotions take over.

Setting Boundaries

Learning how to set boundaries can help students feel safe and empowered when difficult situations arise. Here are two social emotional learning activities that can help students understand their “magical powers” of boundary setting.

As teachers, we end up spending a lot of our time putting out fires between students and navigating friendship conflicts. Some of the most important social emotional learning activities we can do are lessons that help our students build independence with friendship skills.

Mindfulness Activities

As more research is done, the benefits of mindfulness continue to be uncovered – not just for adults, but for kids too! Practicing mindfulness helps us be present, eliminate stress, and navigate big feelings – all things that students can use practice with. Breathing Exercises

Breath plays a very important part in regulating our emotions. These fun breathing exercises help students become aware of their breathing and give some tools to try when they need to self-regulate.

Yoga

Get your students moving with these simple yoga moves. Movement is a great tool for helping students reset their bodies and their minds. You could post this in your calm corner, or use it for brain breaks during your school day.

Learning to accept others and embrace differences is a skill that we should be teaching children as early as possible. These social emotional learning activities are aimed at helping students celebrate their uniqueness, understand differences between themselves and others, and honor the diversity in their classroom and school.

Different But The Same

This activity helps normalize differences by having students identify things that are unique and things that are the same about their tablemates and themselves.

But the truth is… there are a lot of friendship skills that are needed to help children build empathy. As we work on these, students develop their natural empathy.

Why Is Empathy An Important Friendship Skill?

Empathy is a crucial skill for everyone to develop, and it starts with childhood. The Oxford Dictionary defines empathy as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of others”.

As teachers, we do a lot of work to help students understand the perspectives of others. Empathy is the number one friendship skill that students need in order to do this successfully. It plays a huge role in being able to form positive relationships, especially friendships.

Whenever we do work around friendships with students, empathy will be at the center of this work. This important friendship skill will affect how students are able to interact with their peers and create positive relationships at school.

But how do we help students build empathy? There are 5 key friendship skills that we can teach and reinforce with students that will help increase empathy.

The Friendship Skills That Build Empathy

What are the most important friendship skills to work on with students?

1. Self Awareness: Being aware of our actions and how they affect others is a huge part of being empathetic. We can help students set goals about being a good friend, which helps them focus on their actions and the effects of those actions on their classmates.
2. Making New Friends: Making new friends is a skill that even adults struggle with! It takes a lot of bravery, and it also requires learning how to connect with people you don't know very well. When we try to reach out to others, we take on their point of view which exercises those empathy muscles.
3. Being Inclusive: Learning to include others is a huge form of empathy. At school, there are so many important opportunities for students to practice this friendship skill. Coaching students to be inclusive helps them consider the feelings of others, sometimes over their own feelings.
4. Fixing Friendships: Navigating conflicts in friendships is pretty much a constant during elementary school. As we help students learn to apologize and forgive, they build more empathy and understanding for others. This is a key skill that teachers must help their students with.
5. Kindness: Kindness is a term that is thrown around a lot in education, but it's something we have to actively help students practice. Concrete examples of kind actions, alongside the opportunities to put these into action, can greatly help our students increase empathy.

Okay, okay, this sounds great. But how the heck are we going to practice all of these friendship skills in the classroom? Don't worry, I've got you covered! The next section is going to dive into some specific activities you can easily do with your students.

Friendship Activities To Try

Ideally, we would be carving out time every day for this type social emotional learning. And it doesn't have to be hard!

I think a lot of times, social emotional learning gets put to the wayside because we have so much to teach. But we need to set aside time to teach these strategies, allow students to practice, and then review them. (That's why I created the Friendship Skills Curriculum!)

Here are some of my favorite ways to practice friendship skills to build empathy in the classroom:

1. Friendship Goals Anchor Chart

If you're trying to help students build empathy, this is a great place to start. Having students brainstorm what it means to be a good friend will help students start to be more considerate of others. Then take it a step further by having them set a goal for themselves to focus on that week.

Some examples you can give to get the conversation started:

• Letting someone else choose the game
• Waving hello
• Asking how someone is doing
• Helping someone who gets hurt
• Asking someone to play
• Sitting with someone new at lunch
• Sharing a favorite game or toy
• Giving a compliment
• Getting to know a classmate better
• Helping someone with their homework

Once you get started, you can see there are lots of possibilities! And your students will quickly notice how it makes them happier to be friendlier.

2. Making New Friends Booklet

Making new friends at school can feel daunting. But it can also be so beneficial for students, even ones who have close friends that they've known for a long time.

As teachers we can help in two ways:

1. By helping students practice the skills to make new friends, like with this craft booklet. It's always most helpful to give students concrete strategies, such as asking about someone's favorite color, inviting them to play a game, or asking if they can sit with someone at lunch.
2. Creating opportunities during the school day for students to work and sit with new people. I always recommend assigning partners and seats for at least part of the day, so that students get the chance to work with a variety of peers.

A fun book to read when introducing this concept is Let's Play.

3. Inclusivity Fortune Teller

My elementary school has a rule, which is that if someone wants to play with you, you have to say yes. This might sound crazy, but this “inclusivity rule” actually had a huge effect on the community of the school overall.

Even though may not be able to go that far, you can still make inclusivity a rule for your classroom. Having students brainstorm what it means to be inclusive can help them see what this means. Some examples of inclusive acts are:

• Inviting someone new to join the game.
• Sitting with someone new at lunch time.
• Standing up for someone who is being left out.
• Starting a group game that anyone can join.
• Including all your tablemates in the conversation.

You can make this fun with a cute activity like this fortune teller. Students can see which strategy they land on, and try to put it into action that day. As students practice this friendship skill, their empathy towards others automatically grows.

4. Social Stories About Apologies and Forgiveness

Social stories are a great way of helping students think critically about conflict resolution. Asking students for their thoughts on what the characters should do next also helps them build greater independence with this friendship skill.

Here are a few ways to work social stories into your school day:

• Social Stories Worksheets are great for independent practice. Students think about what they would do in that situation, and the helps them later when real friendship conflicts come up.
• Read Alouds where characters are having friendship problems help model various social situations for students. A few of my favorites are The Sour Grape, My New Friend Is So Fun, and Enemy Pie.
• Puppet Shows are a wonderful way for younger students to see friendship conflicts in action. As you act out various social stories about friendship, ask students for their thoughts about what the characters should do next.

The more students are asked to think through these types of situations, the more their empathy and other friendship skills will strengthen.

5. Friendship Challenge

You and your students will LOVE doing a friendship challenge to jumpstart empathy in your classroom. It's totally fun, and not that hard to put together. Here's how it works:

• Each day, you reveal a new row of the challenge. You read all the squares, and students think about one that they would like to do that day.
• Have a time of day to check in with students on their friendship goal. You can check off on the chart, or have another way of recording acts of friendship, such as a gem jar or a paper chain you add on to.
• At the end of the week, when the whole chart has been revealed, you have students reflect on the friendship, kindness, and empathy they participated in.

Friendship Skills In The Classroom

I hope these ideas about empathy and building friendships skills have given you some inspiration to try out some friendship activities with your students. Remember, these are lifelong skills, so your students aren't going to master them in one lesson. It will take many friendship lessons, real-life experiences, and loving examples for students to build up their empathy.

And as resources for students in this area are just never enough, it often falls to us teachers to fill in the gaps.

But here's the good news… there are plenty of ways we can teach socials skills for students that can be easy, fun, and effective.

5 Important Social Skills For School

Some people might think teaching social skills in the classroom is an extra that we just don't have time for. But the truth is, we can't afford to not teach social skills.

So why are social skills important in school? They are crucial in helping students to…

• Focus and engage during lessons
• Interact positively with classmates
• Handle challenges and disappointments

How many times have we had a student miss part of a lesson because they are de-escalating from an episode, recovering from recess drama, or unable to focus?

How many times have we been pulled away from what we're trying to teach to help them?

If we spent just a little bit of time every week teaching and reinforcing some basic social skills, there is no doubt that everyone would benefit.

So what social skills do students need? These are the top 5 that made my list of social skills for students:

1. Expressing Feelings: We all get big feelings sometimes. The more students practice identifying them and communicating them in positive ways, the more they can effectively handle emotions when they come up.
2. Self-Regulation: This is a huge one for the classroom. Students need examples of strategies they can use to help them calm down and re-focus when their bodies or minds are getting in the way of their learning.
3. Setting Boundaries: While this one goes far beyond the bounds of the classroom and into overall child safety, there are important foundations we can lay for students to start standing up and advocating for themselves.
4. Respectful Disagreement: If students could learn to discuss and disagree kindly and respectfully, think of all the fires we wouldn't have to put out!
5. Conflict Resolution: Even the best of friends have fights now and then. Students can become more independent in handling these friendship bumps, apologizing and forgiving, and moving on.

Now that we have a list of 5 important social skills for students to be learning practicing at school, let's dive into each one in more detail. Teaching these explicitly is so important for students to be able to start using these skills independently. (That's why I created the Social Skills curriculum!)

Social Skills #1: Expressing Feelings

Expressing feelings is a great place to start if you're new to teaching social skills in the classroom. There are lots of fun ways to teach students to identify their emotions and express them in appropriate ways:

• Try creating a chart that shows different emotions. You can have student volunteers act out the different emotions, or even turn it into a game where the other students have to guess which emotion is being acted out. Post the chart somewhere in the classroom and ask students at different times to identify how they are feeling.
• A great book to read with your class for this classroom social skill is Big Feelings.
• You can also create a feelings form and have it available for students to fill out at different times. The feelings form should let them easily identify their current emotion. This is great social skills practice for students who need support with communicating big feelings.

Social Skills #2: Self-Regulation

Self-regulation would make the top of any child social skills checklist. This skill is so necessary for success in the classroom, it definitely deserves our attention when we set out to teach social skills.

So how can we help students with self-regulation?

• Teach explicit strategies: You can decide which strategies are workable for your classroom, but some great options are things like using a fidget, drawing a picture, doing ten jumping jacks, talking with a friend, taking deep breaths, visiting a calm corner, etc.
• Practice these strategies: Without repetition and reminders, students will never learn to actually use the strategies you've taught. Model them, suggest them, and post them in a visible place in the classroom for students to refer to.
• Create a calm down space: Many teachers choose to create a “calm corner” in their classroom, full of the materials that students might need to self-regulate or de-escalate. Your calm corner might have a comfy chair, some books to look at, charts with breathing exercises, fidgets, or drawing materials. You can direct a student to the calm corner, or students can ask if they can go spend time there.
• Set clear boundaries: You might worry that your students will take advantage of these tools, and that's valid. There should be clear rules around when these strategies can be used or when the calm corner can be used. If a student doesn't respect those rules, then you'll need to provide a consequence – this might look like limiting the available options, or you deciding when they can be used.

Social Skills #3: Setting Boundaries

Setting boundaries goes beyond learning social skills and has everything to do with child safety. Teaching our students how to set boundaries helps empower them to stand up for themselves and handle tricky situations with confidence. But it can also help us a whole lot too – empowered students need less help from their teacher to solve every little problem!

I like to break down setting boundaries into four main strategies:

1. Speak Up: students talk to the person when they think something isn't right
2. Walk Away: students can walk away and go do something else
3. Get Help: students can get the help of an adult if something isn't safe
4. Self Affirm: students can say kind words to themselves if their feelings were hurt

Practicing these strategies with scenarios in class together is a great way to help students understand when to use each strategy. And of course, I love a good craft for reinforcing these social skills for school.

Social Skills #4: Respectful Disagreement

Can we just take a moment to think about how many adults don't know how to respectfully disagree?? I mean, if there was ever a skill that needs to be taught young…

Helping students learn to respectfully disagree can be simple! Try these ideas:

• Give sentence frames to work from that use the positive language you want students to practice.
• Model this for students throughout the day.
• Provide opportunities for students to share differing points of view so they can practice.

Social Skills #5: Conflict Resolution

As teachers, we spend a lot of our time putting out fires and trying to help students through conflicts. But our students can and should learn be learning these skill too! Conflict resolution is an important social skill for students to start practicing early on.

One pet peeve I have as a teacher is insincere apologies. But students need support with how to make their apologies more meaningful. One great way to do this is to break it down into clear steps for them:

1. Say sorry for what you did
2. Say why it was wrong
3. Say what you'll do differently next time
4. Ask what you can do to make them feel better right now

These four steps help students really understand why they were at fault, and it helps the other student feel like they are being heard and taken care of.

Social Skills For Students

I hope these social skills for school have given you some inspiration to try out some social skills activities with your students.

I know it can feel like you don't have time to fit one more thing in, teaching these skills will pay off big time in the long run. Your students will be more independent, your classroom will run more smoothly, and ultimately students will be more able to focus on learning.
