Why We Need to Teach Self Esteem

Incorporating self-esteem activities for kids in the classroom is one of the best ways to help young children develop a strong sense of self-worth. This impacts their success in the classroom in a very real way. A child's self-esteem influences their ability to try new things, engage in social situations, and handle negative thoughts.

Self Esteem and Mental Health in the Classroom

Mental health is an important part of a child's overall well-being, and good self-esteem plays a crucial role in maintaining emotional development. When children experience low self-esteem, they may struggle with negative self-talk, avoiding new challenges or doubting their own abilities.

Creating a supportive environment where children can practice self esteem activities for kids and focus on their positive traits helps to counteract these negative feelings. Teachers who prioritize emotional intelligence and social development in their classrooms help students build a positive self-image and healthy relationships with peers.

There are lots of times that we can incorporate self esteem activities for kids into our school day. For example:

• During morning meeting or circle time
• As part of our social emotional learning lesson time
• As an option during choice time or workshop time
• During transitions between lessons or going/coming from recess

Best Self Esteem Activities for Kids

There are various self esteem activities for students that teachers can use to foster self esteem in the classroom. These activities focus on promoting positive thinking, problem-solving skills, and a sense of accomplishment.

I've rounded up some of my favorites. Some of these are independent craft projects that students do on their own, some are group activities to do together as a class, and some are discussions around children's books that are relevant to the topic of children's self esteem.

In deciding which of these self esteem activities for kids are best for your students, think of the needs of your students as well as what works best for you in your classroom planning. There's no wrong way to do it, as long as you're doing something! It's always okay to start simple and then plan to do more later.

Crafts

Crafting is a great way to help children express their emotions and recognize their strengths. Crafts help students practice and apply new skills without even realizing they are doing this hard work! I love using crafts in my classroom as a way to review any topic, and social emotional topics are no different.

These crafts have been selected because they are age appropriate and research based self esteem activities for kids. They are also very low prep, and don't require extra work from you to add to your lessons – so it's a win-win!

Here are some fun and confidence-building activities you can use with your students:

Positive Affirmations Craft

In this craft, students think of adjectives that describe themselves. They put these adjectives around a self-portrait, creating their very own affirmation station. You can brainstorm positive adjectives with your class (and weave a grammar review in there at the same time!) to help them get going. These can be displayed in the classroom, or kept at students' desks as a constant reminder of how great they are!

Bucket Filler Craft

In this self esteem craft for kids, students think of positive messages they can tell themselves to fill their own buckets. The bucket metaphor (see book suggestion below!) is a well-loved metaphor that is great for children. Then students write their positive messages in stars and hearts and glue them around their bucket. You can brainstorm positive messages with your class to help them get going. These make a fun display for your classroom!

“What I Love About Me” Craft

In this self esteem activity for kids, students think of things they love about themselves. This can be anything from their long curly hair to their funky dance moves to their empathy for others. Then students write down three of these things to help them remember how great they are. This is a wonderful activity for helping students wire their brain to recognize positive things about themselves and send themselves positive messages.

Taking Care Of Me Craft

In this self care craft for kids, students are invited to think hard about what they need to feel supported. Self care is an important skill, and it takes self reflection to be able to recognize what we need in the moment when we are upset. This flipbook walks students through the process of reflecting on what helps them feel better when they are upset – what people can they talk to? where can they go? what activities are soothing? Recording this information in a flipbook will help students be more likely to act on these ideas when they are next upset.

Self Love Journal

Journaling is an important skill that can be especially helpful to young people as they learn to navigate their feelings. Journaling is one of my favorite self esteem activities for kids, because there are so many possibilities. From positive affirmations to identifying emotions, there are lots of possibilities for journaling. Including self love journaling as a weekly activity can be a great way to help students build these important social emotional learning skills.

Books

Reading children's books that highlight self-esteem and confidence is an important part of fostering a positive mindset. Children's books are a wonderful way to show examples of new strategies or concepts – when students see them in action in the characters' stories, they are more likely to be able to apply these ideas to their own lives.

I've rounded up some ideas for you that cover topics like positive affirmations, accepting and loving our unique qualities, and reflecting on our needs when we're upset. These books can be great companions to some of the other self esteem activities for kids included in this post!

This book validates the familiar feeling of wishing we were someone else. But then it goes on to remind students of all the amazing things that only they can do! This book is great for curbing feelings of jealousy or inadequacy amongst your students.

I Am, I Can

This book provides daily affirmations, along with some activities to go with them. This is a great book to pair with the self affirmations craft.

How Full Is Your Bucket?

Students have probably heard about filling each other’s buckets to spread kindness. Whenever someone receives a kind compliment, their bucket is filled. Whenever something negative happens, their bucket gets dipped. This book reminds students that we have to fill our own buckets too!

It's Okay

This book teaches students that even when they mistake or are having a hard time, they are still worthy of love and acceptance. This is an especially helpful book to read to students who have a hard time with perfectionism or making mistakes.

Sometimes I Need

This is a wonderful book with lots of strategies students can use for identifying what they need when they’re having a hard time. Use this book to help your students reflect on how they can help themselves and empower them to ask for what they need when they are upset.

Full Class Activities

It can be fun to do some self esteem activities with your whole class. These ideas give you some anchor charts that you can do to get the whole class involved and practicing self esteem strategies.

I love doing this type of activity to hype up your class before a big test or when starting a new concept that’s particularly challenging.

You can use these examples as inspiration to draw your own anchor charts. Or, I've also included the links to check out the templates if you'd like to save time by printing them or tracing them!

What I Love About Me Chart

In this self esteem activity, students think of something that makes them unique and special. They each write their idea down on a star and add it to the anchor chart. I love this activity for highlighting that our differences are actually unique qualities to be loved and appreciated. Reframing negative thoughts about the self is so important, especially for children.

Positive Affirmations Chart

For this anchor chart, students have to help think of positive affirmations. This can become your own little classroom affirmation station. Post it in the classroom and let students start the day by saying a positive affirmation of their choice!

In this self esteem activity, students think of a kind message they can tell themselves. They each write their idea down on a heart and add it to the anchor chart. I love this activity for helping our students practice positive self talk and self encouragement.

Taking Care Of Me Chart

In this self esteem activity, students brainstorm ways that they can take care of themselves when they are having a hard time. Encourage them to think of people they can talk to about what's wrong, safe spaces they can go to reset, and soothing activities that help them self regulate. You can have students share their ideas and write them on the chart, or have students write them on sticky notes and add them to the chart themselves. I love this activity for practicing self care habits and getting students thinking about ways they can advocate for themselves.

Positive Affirmations Song

This self esteem activity for kids is not an anchor chart – it's a song! And it's a great activity to do with your class that requires zero prep from you! Singing a positive affirmations song as part of your morning meeting or morning circle time can be a great way to start the day off with positivity and high self esteem.

Tips for Teaching Self Esteem

It's not that hard to start weaving these activities into your classroom – you just have to pick a way to start and jump in! And the effects of doing so will be so worth it. Our students need these kinds of activities to help them build the skills to succeed in the classroom.

When children are taught the importance of self-esteem, they develop healthier relationships, handle social situations with confidence, and approach new things with excitement rather than fear. Positive reinforcement, a safe space, and engaging activities all contribute to emotional intelligence and self-worth. What Is Kindness Week?

Kindness week is a week or several days devoted to promoting kind acts in your classroom. Some teachers take a bit of time every day, or their morning meeting time, and focus on different ways of being kind. This can be a great opportunity to encourage kind acts and build positivity in your school community.

During this time, it's helpful to explicitly teach students tools and strategies to be kind. Elementary students are still learning important ideas like good deeds, empathy, and spreading kind acts within their school community. Kindness a great way for teachers to promote values that help shape students into compassionate and considerate individuals. For elementary students, it’s not just about doing good deeds but also about learning how to build connections and make the world a better place, one small act at a time.

Incorporating Kindness Week into your lesson plans is the perfect opportunity to…

• Create a culture of kindness that permeates the school day and beyond.
• Develop interpersonal skills like empathy, cooperation, and active listening through kind gestures.

Planning Your Kindness Week Activities

I've found that a great way to organize your Kindness Week activities into your school day lesson plans is to have a theme for each day. I like to read a kindness book, do a group kindness activity, and then make a kindness craft for each day that all tie into the theme.

Here are the daily themes that I use in my Kindness Week lesson plans:

• Day 1: Being A Kind Friend

• Day 4: Being a Bucket Filler
• Day 5: Celebrating Kindness

Next I'll share the Kindness Week ideas for students that I use for each day – these are tried and true activities that will get students to use kind acts in the classroom!

15 Kindness Ideas For Students

Day 1: Being A Good Friend

This anchor chart is a wonderful visual to help students understand actions that make them a good friend. Invite students to brainstorm how to be a good friend, and how not to be a good friend. Often times, including these negative traits can be helpful for students, who need things laid out explicitly.

This is one of my favorite children's books for teaching students the importance of kind acts and inclusiveness. Each Kindness is a poignant story of a new student who isn't welcomed into the classroom. The main character in the story must then examine her own actions and reflect on how she didn't make a kind choice.

This next Kindness Week idea for students is a kind friend flipbook. This is a great way to help students remember ways to be a kind friend. It offers them specific strategies for being kind, which are concrete ways they can practice kindness in their school community.

Day 2: Using Kind Words

Remembering to use kind words can be tricky for our students! Use this class anchor chart to help students brainstorm kind things they can say to their classmates. It's so helpful for students to have examples of phrases they can use to be kind – you'll definitely be hearing those words around your classroom in no time!

Writing kindness notes with positive messages is one of my favorite Kindness Week ideas for students. This kindness craft activity invites students to write kindness notes to their peers using these kindness note templates. There are lots of ways you can organize this:

You can have students write to whoever they want to in the class, or assign them a student to make a kind note for. You can make them anonymous, or let students sign who they're from. You can do this once, or make the notes available at a certain time of day for students to write again and again. (One recommendation: It's best if they turn them into you, and you deliver them – this way you can make sure everyone is receiving at least one, and you can preview them if you are worried students might abuse this work and include a not nice message.)

The children's book The Smallest Girl In The Smallest Grade provides a good illustration of how powerful kind words can be. In this story, a girl stands up for other students aren't being treated kindly. She uses her kind words to help them – this is a great story for empowering students use their words to help their school community.

Day 3: Kind Actions

A kindness chain is one of the most fun Kindness Week ideas for students, and it gets the whole class involved! Observe your students and mentally note anytime you see a random act of kindness. Choose a time of day to recognize students and share what you saw. For each act of kindness you saw, add a paper link to your kindness chain. Your students will love watching your kindness chain grow! (You can also have students share any kind acts they witnessed!)

This Sprinkle Kindness Like Confetti anchor chart is the perfect way to help your students brainstorm kind actions that they can do at school. Invite your students to share their ideas and fill it up with kind things they can do for their classmates and teachers.

I love the children's book When We Are Kind for illustrating random acts of kindness and their effects. This book shows simple acts of kindness that we can carry out in our classroom and home communities.

Day 4: Being A Bucket Filler

If you've never read Have You Filled A Bucket Today? then this is your sign to do it now! The bucket filler books are one of my favorite kindness week ideas for students – they have such a wonderful metaphor for kind deeds and unkind deeds and how they affect one another. It's a great illustration that students can really relate to and understand when it comes to talking about kindness.

I absolutely LOVE catching students being kind, so this is something I actually do all year long, but it's also perfect for Kindness Week ideas for students. This anchor chart is filled with positive traits of kindness. Throughout the day, make a mental note when you notice a student acting out one of these positive traits. Then pick a time of day to share what you noticed, and invite the students to place a sticker under the word that they showcased. Students will love being recognized for their kind acts!

This is another kindness challenge that becomes a kindness bulletin board for your classroom. Each day, students choose a random act of kindness from a paper heart. Once they've completed their random act of kindness, they put it up on the bulletin board. At the end of the week, your bulletin board will be full of different acts of kindness!

Tips For Getting Students Involved

Involving students in planning and executing Kindness Week activities is the best way to ensure engagement. Here’s how:

Invite Students to Lead

Give students leadership roles by assigning them to plan specific activities or projects. For example:

• A group could organize a “Kindness Bingo Challenge” with tasks like helping a peer, sharing a toy, or writing a letter to a family member.
• Another could design a “Day of Kindness” schedule to implement small kindness projects throughout the school day.

Use Small Groups

Divide the class into small groups to work on different kindness projects, such as creating thank-you cards for school staff or collecting donations for an animal shelter. This approach helps students develop teamwork and encourages collaboration.

Incorporate SEL Lessons

Design an SEL-themed lesson plan that focuses on empathy and the “ripple effect” of kindness. Discuss how one random act of kindness can inspire others and create a chain reaction of positivity. Choosing Children's Books About Mindfulness

Mindfulness is such an important tool for students to use. There are so many benefits to mindfulness in the classroom, but there just aren't that many resources available yet that are made just for students. (That's why I created these Mindfulness Lessons!)

The good news is, there are more and more children's books about social emotional learning available these days. But it can be hard to know which ones are the best for your students…

How should you go about choosing children's books about mindfulness? Here are a few tips:

• Look for books that have clear strategies that students can practice themselves. Giving children explicit examples of mindfulness that they can use in their own lives is so helpful!
• Look for characters that your students can relate to. It's so important to expose children to characters that are like themselves (but also important to expose them to characters that are different – we need a mix of windows and mirrors!)
• Choose books that have full class exercises you can do together! These are great for brain breaks and transitions between lessons, and create an easy way to squeeze some mindfulness activities into the school day.
• Find books that you could weave into your academic subjects. So often, we can create a writing response or some comprehension work around any read aloud. That makes it so much easier to include social emotional learning lessons as a natural part of the school day – perfect!

Social emotional learning for the classroom sounds great and all, but how can we teachers actually put it into action? There are SO many SEL topics out there, so I've done the work for you and selected the ones that students will most benefit from in a classroom setting.

Social Emotional Learning Activities For The Classroom

I'm sharing some of my all-time favorite social emotional learning activities for the classroom. The ideal situation would be to have one day a week with a time block set aside for SEL lessons. However, I know this can be hard to swing for some teachers.

Fear not – these activities can be squeezed into your morning meeting, a transition between lessons, or even an add on to a read aloud. You don't have to get fancy!

If you start to get overwhelmed at the thought of researching, planning, and prepping social emotional learning lessons, just remember – there are lots of great resources out there already! (And that's why I created this year long Social Emotional Learning Curriculum – that you don't have to waste your time reinventing the wheel.)

Growth Mindset Activities

Growth mindset is a great place to start with your social emotional learning activities. Here are a couple of my absolute favorite activities to get you started!

Fixed Vs. Growth Mindset

Teaching students to understand the differences between a fixed versus growth mindset is the beginning of building a strong growth mindset. This social emotional learning activity is a must-have for teachers who want to help their students build persistence.

This anchor chart is a great visual for students as they are learning about fixed mindset and growth mindset.

Positive Self Talk

Learning to speak kindly to ourselves is a huge SEL topic. Luckily, there are many amazing social emotional learning activities centered on this very concept. Help your students understand the importance of speaking kindly to our minds by giving concrete examples, modeling frequently, and doing fun social emotional learning activities like this cute fortune teller to help students put it into practice!

Social Skills Activities

Social skills are so important to academic success, yet teachers rarely get the time or support they need to be able to teach them. Here are some engaging social skill activities that you can do with your class anytime to start their learning:

Self-Regulation

A student's ability to self regulate will contribute a lot to their ability to succeed in the classroom. This group activity is a great way to give students concrete examples of ways they can recenter themselves when big emotions take over.

Setting Boundaries

Learning how to set boundaries can help students feel safe and empowered when difficult situations arise. Here are two social emotional learning activities that can help students understand their “magical powers” of boundary setting.

As teachers, we end up spending a lot of our time putting out fires between students and navigating friendship conflicts. Some of the most important social emotional learning activities we can do are lessons that help our students build independence with friendship skills.

Many students need support with making new friends. This flipbook helps students with concrete strategies they can practice and put in action to make new friends.

Navigating Friendship Conflicts

Even the best of friends have arguments and disagreements. Students can learn the best ways to handle these conflicts with modeling, read alouds, and social stories. These social stories are a great social emotional learning activity for helping your students build their friendship skills.

Mindfulness Activities

As more research is done, the benefits of mindfulness continue to be uncovered – not just for adults, but for kids too! Practicing mindfulness helps us be present, eliminate stress, and navigate big feelings – all things that students can use practice with. Here are a few of my favorite social emotional learning activities for teaching mindfulness to kids.

Breathing Exercises

Breath plays a very important part in regulating our emotions. These fun breathing exercises help students become aware of their breathing and give some tools to try when they need to self-regulate.

Yoga

Get your students moving with these simple yoga moves. Movement is a great tool for helping students reset their bodies and their minds. You could post this in your calm corner, or use it for brain breaks during your school day.

Celebrating Diversity

Learning to accept others and embrace differences is a skill that we should be teaching children as early as possible. These social emotional learning activities are aimed at helping students celebrate their uniqueness, understand differences between themselves and others, and honor the diversity in their classroom and school.

Celebrating Differences

This anchor chart display is a wonderful visual to help students understand that differences are beautiful.

Different But The Same

This activity helps normalize differences by having students identify things that are unique and things that are the same about their tablemates and themselves.

More than ever, students need support with positive mental health and self love. This is an important piece of social emotional learning that should be done at school.

Social Emotional Learning Activities For Students

I hope these ideas about social emotional learning and social skills have given you some inspiration to try out some SEL activities with your students. Remember, these are lifelong skills, so your students aren't going to master them in one lesson. It will take many discussions, real-life experiences, and loving examples for students to build up these skills.

But the truth is… there are a lot of friendship skills that are needed to help children build empathy. As we work on these, students develop their natural empathy.

Why Is Empathy An Important Friendship Skill?

Empathy is a crucial skill for everyone to develop, and it starts with childhood. The Oxford Dictionary defines empathy as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of others”.

As teachers, we do a lot of work to help students understand the perspectives of others. Empathy is the number one friendship skill that students need in order to do this successfully. It plays a huge role in being able to form positive relationships, especially friendships.

Whenever we do work around friendships with students, empathy will be at the center of this work. This important friendship skill will affect how students are able to interact with their peers and create positive relationships at school.

But how do we help students build empathy? There are 5 key friendship skills that we can teach and reinforce with students that will help increase empathy.

The Friendship Skills That Build Empathy

What are the most important friendship skills to work on with students?

1. Self Awareness: Being aware of our actions and how they affect others is a huge part of being empathetic. We can help students set goals about being a good friend, which helps them focus on their actions and the effects of those actions on their classmates.
2. Making New Friends: Making new friends is a skill that even adults struggle with! It takes a lot of bravery, and it also requires learning how to connect with people you don't know very well. When we try to reach out to others, we take on their point of view which exercises those empathy muscles.
3. Being Inclusive: Learning to include others is a huge form of empathy. At school, there are so many important opportunities for students to practice this friendship skill. Coaching students to be inclusive helps them consider the feelings of others, sometimes over their own feelings.
4. Fixing Friendships: Navigating conflicts in friendships is pretty much a constant during elementary school. As we help students learn to apologize and forgive, they build more empathy and understanding for others. This is a key skill that teachers must help their students with.
5. Kindness: Kindness is a term that is thrown around a lot in education, but it's something we have to actively help students practice. Concrete examples of kind actions, alongside the opportunities to put these into action, can greatly help our students increase empathy.

Okay, okay, this sounds great. But how the heck are we going to practice all of these friendship skills in the classroom? Don't worry, I've got you covered! The next section is going to dive into some specific activities you can easily do with your students.

Friendship Activities To Try

Ideally, we would be carving out time every day for this type social emotional learning. And it doesn't have to be hard!

I think a lot of times, social emotional learning gets put to the wayside because we have so much to teach. But we need to set aside time to teach these strategies, allow students to practice, and then review them. (That's why I created the Friendship Skills Curriculum!)

Here are some of my favorite ways to practice friendship skills to build empathy in the classroom:

1. Friendship Goals Anchor Chart

If you're trying to help students build empathy, this is a great place to start. Having students brainstorm what it means to be a good friend will help students start to be more considerate of others. Then take it a step further by having them set a goal for themselves to focus on that week.

Some examples you can give to get the conversation started:

• Letting someone else choose the game
• Waving hello
• Asking how someone is doing
• Helping someone who gets hurt
• Asking someone to play
• Sitting with someone new at lunch
• Sharing a favorite game or toy
• Giving a compliment
• Getting to know a classmate better
• Helping someone with their homework

Once you get started, you can see there are lots of possibilities! And your students will quickly notice how it makes them happier to be friendlier.

2. Making New Friends Booklet

Making new friends at school can feel daunting. But it can also be so beneficial for students, even ones who have close friends that they've known for a long time.

As teachers we can help in two ways:

1. By helping students practice the skills to make new friends, like with this craft booklet. It's always most helpful to give students concrete strategies, such as asking about someone's favorite color, inviting them to play a game, or asking if they can sit with someone at lunch.
2. Creating opportunities during the school day for students to work and sit with new people. I always recommend assigning partners and seats for at least part of the day, so that students get the chance to work with a variety of peers.

A fun book to read when introducing this concept is Let's Play.

3. Inclusivity Fortune Teller

My elementary school has a rule, which is that if someone wants to play with you, you have to say yes. This might sound crazy, but this “inclusivity rule” actually had a huge effect on the community of the school overall.

Even though may not be able to go that far, you can still make inclusivity a rule for your classroom. Having students brainstorm what it means to be inclusive can help them see what this means. Some examples of inclusive acts are:

• Inviting someone new to join the game.
• Sitting with someone new at lunch time.
• Standing up for someone who is being left out.
• Starting a group game that anyone can join.
• Including all your tablemates in the conversation.

You can make this fun with a cute activity like this fortune teller. Students can see which strategy they land on, and try to put it into action that day. As students practice this friendship skill, their empathy towards others automatically grows.

4. Social Stories About Apologies and Forgiveness

Social stories are a great way of helping students think critically about conflict resolution. Asking students for their thoughts on what the characters should do next also helps them build greater independence with this friendship skill.

Here are a few ways to work social stories into your school day:

• Social Stories Worksheets are great for independent practice. Students think about what they would do in that situation, and the helps them later when real friendship conflicts come up.
• Read Alouds where characters are having friendship problems help model various social situations for students. A few of my favorites are The Sour Grape, My New Friend Is So Fun, and Enemy Pie.
• Puppet Shows are a wonderful way for younger students to see friendship conflicts in action. As you act out various social stories about friendship, ask students for their thoughts about what the characters should do next.

The more students are asked to think through these types of situations, the more their empathy and other friendship skills will strengthen.

5. Friendship Challenge

You and your students will LOVE doing a friendship challenge to jumpstart empathy in your classroom. It's totally fun, and not that hard to put together. Here's how it works:

• Each day, you reveal a new row of the challenge. You read all the squares, and students think about one that they would like to do that day.
• Have a time of day to check in with students on their friendship goal. You can check off on the chart, or have another way of recording acts of friendship, such as a gem jar or a paper chain you add on to.
• At the end of the week, when the whole chart has been revealed, you have students reflect on the friendship, kindness, and empathy they participated in.

Friendship Skills In The Classroom

I hope these ideas about empathy and building friendships skills have given you some inspiration to try out some friendship activities with your students. Remember, these are lifelong skills, so your students aren't going to master them in one lesson. It will take many friendship lessons, real-life experiences, and loving examples for students to build up their empathy.

How To Use Friendship Picture Books

I absolutely LOVE using children's books in my teaching whenever I can. This is true for academic areas, but even more so for social emotional learning topics.

You can use picture books about friendship anytime, but I find them to be especially useful…

1. In response to a specific problem you see popping up in your classroom. Then you can introduce the book by saying, “I've been noticing ____ happening a lot. Let's see what the characters in this book can teach us about it!”
2. To encourage students to be problem solvers. As you read, you might say, “I'm noticing characters in this book are having a lot of trouble with _____. What do you think they should do?”
3. As part of a monthly theme or focus. I love having a monthly focus for our social emotional learning work. For example, in December we read a lot about generosity and sharing. Friendship books are perfect for April, when all the drama drama starts to rear its ugly head!

There are lots of ways to weave these friendship read alouds into your day. Try using them during transitions, as part of your morning meeting, or even as a way to end the school day.

My favorite way is to have a designated time of the week for Social Emotional Learning lessons, and to use them in conjunction with your SEL work (you can check out the SEL Friendship Unit here!)

Picture Books About Friendship

I'm so excited to share my very favorite friendship children's books! These are the best read alouds to pull out when your class is having a little friendship drama.

I've divided them into categories for you to make it easier to find what you need:

4. Fixing Friendship Problems

Children's Books About Being A Good Friend

Being a good friend is a skill that children have to practice over time. It takes a long time for some children to be able to put themselves in others' shoes, and to build the empathy of a true friend.

These read alouds are so helpful for students, because they give concrete examples of what friendship looks like. They are full of simple strategies that any child can try on the playground that same day.

My Way To Making Friends

In this story, the main character Melissa has trouble making friends. Melissa is very relatable to those students who may feel like they can never connect with their classmates.

Throughout the story, she learns some important strategies to help her overcome these challenges. In the end, the lessons she learns help her connect with others and find friendship.

Make a Friend, Be a Friend

This book is a helpful guide about all things friendship for kids. Full of clear and simple strategies, it can be a great starting place for students who have trouble making friends, or a great reminder for students who may have forgotten what friendship is all about.

It has sections on making friends, being a good friend, showing you want to be a friend, and fixing friendships – so you can jump to exactly what your students need most!

Teach Your Dragon To Make Friends

This is a very cute friendship book in the Teach Your Dragon series. Dragon is having trouble making friends, and he can't figure out what keeps going wrong. His friend helps him understand that friendship requires being kind and inclusive.

As Dragon learns to be a good friend, he practices various strategies that students can utilize too. I love this book because of the highly engaging pictures and the sweet friendship between a boy and his dragon.

The Kids' Book of Friends

This is one of the best friendship picture books as another helpful guide for students. It contains straightforward tips and strategies that will get students thinking about how they can be a better friend.

Children's Books About Making New Friends

Making new friends may seem like a “back to school” topic, but it is actually important to revisit all the time. In elementary school, friendships fluctuate constantly. I find that students are always shifting in who they are playing with.

For students who find that they've suddenly lost their best playmate, it can be a helpful reminder that they have the tools to make new friends at any point in the school year. These friendship picture books help students with strategies for doing just that.

Let's Play!

This friendship picture book shares the story of a new girl who is nervous about making friends. Luckily, her classmates know just how to make her feel welcome!

Words To Make A Friend

Two girls who speak different languages learn that making new friends doesn’t always need words. This is such a sweet book to show that friendship is powerful enough to overcome all kinds of barriers. And it can help your students feel brave enough to reach out to make new friends in all kinds of situations.

Can Cat And Bird Be Friends?

A sweet friendship book about a bird who decides to befriend a cat. The cat is a little hesitant at first, because after all – isn't he supposed to want to eat him? But this bird doesn't give up on this potential new friend!

Children's Books About Being Inclusive

We all wish our students could learn to be a little more inclusive, don't we? These friendship picture books will help remind your students that their actions matter, and that small acts of inclusivity can make a huge difference for a friend in need.

A poignant friendship book about what can happen when we aren’t inclusive and kind to new people. This book is a great conversation starter for talking about the power of our actions.

Children's Books About Conflict Resolution

As teachers, we can end up spending a lot of energy on putting out fires between friends. This can look like helping friends communicate clearly, navigating apologies, and helping students see things from someone else's perspective.

But those are all skills that children can learn to be independent with! This next set of friendship picture books is perfect for helping your students navigate those inevitable friendship bumps.

This series is definitely one to add to your friendship picture books list. In this book, the Sour Grape always holds a grudges. He learns important lessons of friendship and forgiveness in this story.

My New Friend Is So Fun

My students go wild for Piggie and Gerald books! In this one, they learn to navigate some friendship bumps when Piggie finds a new friend to play with.

Friendship Picture Books

I hope these friendship picture books have given you lots of ideas for how to start doing some serious friendship work with your students. These topics are usually the biggest ones that pop up during the year, so it's a good idea to have these read alouds about friendship on hand!

And as resources for students in this area are just never enough, it often falls to us teachers to fill in the gaps.

But here's the good news… there are plenty of ways we can teach socials skills for students that can be easy, fun, and effective.

5 Important Social Skills For School

Some people might think teaching social skills in the classroom is an extra that we just don't have time for. But the truth is, we can't afford to not teach social skills.

So why are social skills important in school? They are crucial in helping students to…

• Focus and engage during lessons
• Interact positively with classmates
• Handle challenges and disappointments

How many times have we had a student miss part of a lesson because they are de-escalating from an episode, recovering from recess drama, or unable to focus?

How many times have we been pulled away from what we're trying to teach to help them?

If we spent just a little bit of time every week teaching and reinforcing some basic social skills, there is no doubt that everyone would benefit.

So what social skills do students need? These are the top 5 that made my list of social skills for students:

1. Expressing Feelings: We all get big feelings sometimes. The more students practice identifying them and communicating them in positive ways, the more they can effectively handle emotions when they come up.
2. Self-Regulation: This is a huge one for the classroom. Students need examples of strategies they can use to help them calm down and re-focus when their bodies or minds are getting in the way of their learning.
3. Setting Boundaries: While this one goes far beyond the bounds of the classroom and into overall child safety, there are important foundations we can lay for students to start standing up and advocating for themselves.
4. Respectful Disagreement: If students could learn to discuss and disagree kindly and respectfully, think of all the fires we wouldn't have to put out!
5. Conflict Resolution: Even the best of friends have fights now and then. Students can become more independent in handling these friendship bumps, apologizing and forgiving, and moving on.

Now that we have a list of 5 important social skills for students to be learning practicing at school, let's dive into each one in more detail. Teaching these explicitly is so important for students to be able to start using these skills independently. (That's why I created the Social Skills curriculum!)

Social Skills #1: Expressing Feelings

Expressing feelings is a great place to start if you're new to teaching social skills in the classroom. There are lots of fun ways to teach students to identify their emotions and express them in appropriate ways:

• Try creating a chart that shows different emotions. You can have student volunteers act out the different emotions, or even turn it into a game where the other students have to guess which emotion is being acted out. Post the chart somewhere in the classroom and ask students at different times to identify how they are feeling.
• A great book to read with your class for this classroom social skill is Big Feelings.
• You can also create a feelings form and have it available for students to fill out at different times. The feelings form should let them easily identify their current emotion. This is great social skills practice for students who need support with communicating big feelings.

Social Skills #2: Self-Regulation

Self-regulation would make the top of any child social skills checklist. This skill is so necessary for success in the classroom, it definitely deserves our attention when we set out to teach social skills.

So how can we help students with self-regulation?

• Teach explicit strategies: You can decide which strategies are workable for your classroom, but some great options are things like using a fidget, drawing a picture, doing ten jumping jacks, talking with a friend, taking deep breaths, visiting a calm corner, etc.
• Practice these strategies: Without repetition and reminders, students will never learn to actually use the strategies you've taught. Model them, suggest them, and post them in a visible place in the classroom for students to refer to.
• Create a calm down space: Many teachers choose to create a “calm corner” in their classroom, full of the materials that students might need to self-regulate or de-escalate. Your calm corner might have a comfy chair, some books to look at, charts with breathing exercises, fidgets, or drawing materials. You can direct a student to the calm corner, or students can ask if they can go spend time there.
• Set clear boundaries: You might worry that your students will take advantage of these tools, and that's valid. There should be clear rules around when these strategies can be used or when the calm corner can be used. If a student doesn't respect those rules, then you'll need to provide a consequence – this might look like limiting the available options, or you deciding when they can be used.

Social Skills #3: Setting Boundaries

Setting boundaries goes beyond learning social skills and has everything to do with child safety. Teaching our students how to set boundaries helps empower them to stand up for themselves and handle tricky situations with confidence. But it can also help us a whole lot too – empowered students need less help from their teacher to solve every little problem!

I like to break down setting boundaries into four main strategies:

1. Speak Up: students talk to the person when they think something isn't right
2. Walk Away: students can walk away and go do something else
3. Get Help: students can get the help of an adult if something isn't safe
4. Self Affirm: students can say kind words to themselves if their feelings were hurt

Practicing these strategies with scenarios in class together is a great way to help students understand when to use each strategy. And of course, I love a good craft for reinforcing these social skills for school.

Social Skills #4: Respectful Disagreement

Can we just take a moment to think about how many adults don't know how to respectfully disagree?? I mean, if there was ever a skill that needs to be taught young…

Helping students learn to respectfully disagree can be simple! Try these ideas:

• Give sentence frames to work from that use the positive language you want students to practice.
• Model this for students throughout the day.
• Provide opportunities for students to share differing points of view so they can practice.

Social Skills #5: Conflict Resolution

As teachers, we spend a lot of our time putting out fires and trying to help students through conflicts. But our students can and should learn be learning these skill too! Conflict resolution is an important social skill for students to start practicing early on.

One pet peeve I have as a teacher is insincere apologies. But students need support with how to make their apologies more meaningful. One great way to do this is to break it down into clear steps for them:

1. Say sorry for what you did
2. Say why it was wrong
3. Say what you'll do differently next time
4. Ask what you can do to make them feel better right now

These four steps help students really understand why they were at fault, and it helps the other student feel like they are being heard and taken care of.

Social Skills For Students

I hope these social skills for school have given you some inspiration to try out some social skills activities with your students.

I know it can feel like you don't have time to fit one more thing in, teaching these skills will pay off big time in the long run. Your students will be more independent, your classroom will run more smoothly, and ultimately students will be more able to focus on learning.
