Social Emotional Learning Topics Your Students Need

Social emotional learning for the classroom sounds great and all, but how can we teachers actually put it into action? There are SO many SEL topics out there, so I've done the work for you and selected the ones that students will most benefit from in a classroom setting.

While there are many other topics that would still be valuable, these social emotional learning lessons focus on skills that will help students thrive at school. These are the ideas that will help students improve academically, manage their behaviors, interact positively with faculty and peers, and build their self esteem as learners.

Here are 7 essential topics for social emotional learning activities that we can teach and reinforce with students. (Click each topic heading to jump to activities for that topic!)

1. Growth Mindset: Growth mindset is so important for learning, as it helps students tackle challenges and build the belief that they can learn new things. Social emotional learning activities with growth mindset in mind are a must-have for the classroom.
2. Social Skills: Social skills help students self-regulate in the classroom and interact with their peers in a positive way. Focusing on social skills saves us valuable time in the long run, since it helps students build more independence and need less help from teachers when problems come up.
3. Friendship Skills: Conflict resolution, making new friends, being inclusive, and practicing kindness are all important friendship skills that students need to feel happy and safe at school.
4. Mindfulness: Studies have shown that mindfulness can reduce stress and increase happiness with all people, and that includes kids too! Mindfulness practices are also a great way to help your students find calm after an exciting task.
5. Celebrating Diversity: Our classrooms are full of students who come from all different backgrounds. They bring a variety of life experiences to school with them, and it's so important we honor those differences, and also teach students to appreciate those differences in each other.
6. Self-Love: Student self esteem can be a huge roadblock in learning and cooperating. We can help students practice self-love and positive mental health skills.
7. Gratitude: Practicing gratitude actually makes us happier! And gratitude can make our classroom more positive spaces.

Social Emotional Learning Activities For The Classroom

I'm sharing some of my all-time favorite social emotional learning activities for the classroom. The ideal situation would be to have one day a week with a time block set aside for SEL lessons. However, I know this can be hard to swing for some teachers.

Fear not – these activities can be squeezed into your morning meeting, a transition between lessons, or even an add on to a read aloud. You don't have to get fancy!

If you start to get overwhelmed at the thought of researching, planning, and prepping social emotional learning lessons, just remember – there are lots of great resources out there already! (And that's why I created this year long Social Emotional Learning Curriculum – that you don't have to waste your time reinventing the wheel.)

Growth Mindset Activities

Growth mindset is a great place to start with your social emotional learning activities. Here are a couple of my absolute favorite activities to get you started!

Fixed Vs. Growth Mindset

Teaching students to understand the differences between a fixed versus growth mindset is the beginning of building a strong growth mindset. This social emotional learning activity is a must-have for teachers who want to help their students build persistence.

This anchor chart is a great visual for students as they are learning about fixed mindset and growth mindset.

Positive Self Talk

Learning to speak kindly to ourselves is a huge SEL topic. Luckily, there are many amazing social emotional learning activities centered on this very concept. Help your students understand the importance of speaking kindly to our minds by giving concrete examples, modeling frequently, and doing fun social emotional learning activities like this cute fortune teller to help students put it into practice!

Social Skills Activities

Social skills are so important to academic success, yet teachers rarely get the time or support they need to be able to teach them. Here are some engaging social skill activities that you can do with your class anytime to start their learning:

Self-Regulation

A student's ability to self regulate will contribute a lot to their ability to succeed in the classroom. This group activity is a great way to give students concrete examples of ways they can recenter themselves when big emotions take over.

Setting Boundaries

Learning how to set boundaries can help students feel safe and empowered when difficult situations arise. Here are two social emotional learning activities that can help students understand their “magical powers” of boundary setting.

Breathing Exercises

Breath plays a very important part in regulating our emotions. These fun breathing exercises help students become aware of their breathing and give some tools to try when they need to self-regulate.

Yoga

Get your students moving with these simple yoga moves. Movement is a great tool for helping students reset their bodies and their minds. You could post this in your calm corner, or use it for brain breaks during your school day.

Learning to accept others and embrace differences is a skill that we should be teaching children as early as possible. These social emotional learning activities are aimed at helping students celebrate their uniqueness, understand differences between themselves and others, and honor the diversity in their classroom and school.

Different But The Same

This activity helps normalize differences by having students identify things that are unique and things that are the same about their tablemates and themselves.

Why Growth Mindset For Students?

Using growth mindset in your classroom can be such a gift for your students. Growth mindset has been gaining momentum as an important tool for learning, and it's valuable to people of all ages.

But did you know that even the developers of growth mindset were hoping it would be applied classroom learning? Carol Dweck, who first introduced growth mindset, has done several studies with classroom-aged children to find out if it can help students improve academically.

And guess what? It can. Read on for some growth mindset classroom inspiration you can start implementing tomorrow!

Best Practices For Growth Mindset In the Classroom

So how can we use the power of growth mindset for students? There are a few important tips to keep in mind as you start using these growth mindset classroom ideas.

1. Growth mindset isn't a one and done deal. For it to truly be effective, the principles need to be reviewed often. So finding ways to make growth mindset an integral part of your classroom is important. This can be done by weaving growth mindset into classroom routines, displays, and even the language you use. More on this further down the post.
2. Want to know one of the number one factors in determining the success of growth mindset? If teachers have a growth mindset view of their students. Let that sink in for a moment… If we believe our students can reach higher levels of learning, they have a much better chance of doing so. So the way we talk about and even think about our students matters. A lot.
3. Growth mindset takes explicit instruction. I think a lot of times, social emotional learning gets put to the wayside because we have so much to teach. But we need to set aside time to teach these strategies, allow students to practice, and then review them. (That's why I created this Growth Mindset Curriculum!)

Growth Mindset Classroom Ideas

So how can we use growth mindset in the classroom? Ideally, we are weaving growth mindset principles into our classroom every day. And this doesn't have to be hard!

Here are some of my favorite ways to create a growth mindset classroom:

1. Teach Fixed Mindset Versus Growth Mindset

If you're trying to create a growth mindset classroom, this is a great place to start. Introduce this language into your classroom, and then use it repeatedly. This can help students start to notice their own thoughts, which is a huge part of being able to apply a growth mindset.

Easy ways to use these terms again and again in your classroom:

• Modeling: You can find times to say to your class “I was just thinking, this is going to be soooo hard. And then I realized – that's a fixed mindset! Instead, I'm going to tell myself, it might feel hard at first, but if I keep trying it will get easier!”
• Reading Books: Whenever you're reading aloud to your class, you can stop and notice when characters have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Ask students to do this too!
• Notice Your Students: Whenever you hear a student saying something that reflects a growth mindset, celebrate it! Privately compliment them, or announce it to the whole class if they would be comfortable with that.

2. Use the Word “YET”

This simple word can be such an easy way to help students to latch onto the idea of growth mindset. Basically, instead of saying “I can't do this” or “I don't understand this”, students practice adding YET to the end… “I can't do this YET” or “I don't understand this YET”.

This can become an ongoing growth mindset classroom activity to enjoy. Students will have fun catching themselves and calling out “I mean… I can't do it YET!” Encourage these types of comments, which help keep this growth mindset work playful.

You can also create a YET display in your classroom to help remind students of this powerful word. Students can post goals they're currently working on the display. Or, you can let students add a sticker to the chart every time they use the word YET when they're describing their own learning.

3. Talk About Easy Versus Hard

Did you know that even the words “easy” and “hard” can be very charged for children? There's nothing worse than when you're struggling over a math problem and the person next to you says “Boy, this is so easy!”

One of the best growth mindset classroom lessons we can teach our students is that things will feel easy and hard at different times, and that's okay. In fact, everyone will differently about different tasks. What's hard to you might be easy for someone else, and something that's hard for them might be easy for you.

It's also helpful to point out to students that there are so many things that used to feel hard that are now easy for them. When they really stop to think about the number of things that they can do without difficulty now, the list goes on and on.

For example…

• Walking! I bet it took them a LOT of practice to walk, and now they can do it no problem. (Obviously, if you have students with disabilities, you'll need to take that into consideration when having these conversations.)
• The ABCs. Chances are, they got it wrong a lot of times when they were little, but now they know their ABCs backwards and forwards.
• Brushing their teeth. They used to have to have a grown up do this for them, but not anymore!

You see you can have fun with that – help them think of all the games, routines, and physical abilities that they have mastered over the years.

4. Practice Positive Self-Talk

Helping students speak encouragingly to themselves can help them build the tools to face challenges independently. Part of a creating a growth mindset classroom is helping foster a positive and encouraging environment. But we want students to grow more and more independent with cheering themselves on.

Here are a few ways to help students get in the habit of fueling themselves with positive words:

• Model it for them. Coach yourself using positive statements so they can see what it looks like in action. You might feel silly, but it will encourage your students to dive in.
• Read books where characters learn to speak positively to themselves. I put together a list of my favorite growth mindset read alouds right here.
• Brainstorm together as a class to come up with positive phrases that students could say to themselves when they feel frustrated or challenged. Post these somewhere visible in the classroom for students to refer to.

5. Practice Setting Goals

Setting goals may sound like a simple growth mindset classroom activity. But the truth is, there is more to goal-setting than we typically think.

While setting goals is a wonderful way to practice growth mindset and perseverance, it's important to help our students understand what goes into making goals. When you set goals with your students, try talking about these key points:

• Type of goals: We have goals in all areas of our life, and they are all important. Encourage students to think about personal goals, academic goals, fun goals, athletic goals, financial goals, friendship goals… the possibilities are so much!
• Difficulty levels goals: Not all goals are created equal. It's important to discuss the possible challenges around goals, so that students aren't setting themselves up for failure or frustration. On the flip side, we want to encourage students not to make goals that are too easy for them.
• Checking back in: It's easy to set a goal and then forget all about it. If you do goal-setting with your students, make sure you circle back and have a time to reflect on the goals and the progress that students have made.

By creating a growth mindset classroom and weaving growth mindset activities for kids into our school day, we are helping build a foundation of self esteem and success for our students.

Growth Mindset For Students

What is growth mindset anyway? If you’re not familiar with growth mindset, here is a brief overview. It explores the idea that some of us have a “fixed mindset”, which means we believe our abilities are a certain way and that there’s not much we can do about it. And others have a “growth mindset”, which means they believe that they have the capacity to learn and grow and get better at just about anything.

Carol Dweck has led the way with research about growth mindset. But she says there’s a lot more to it than just putting in effort to show improvement.  While perseverance is certainly a trademark of growth mindset work, it’s also about embracing and even enjoying challenges, rather than shying away from them.

But you’re probably wondering, “How does this relate to my students?” Researchers are highly interested in the impact growth mindset can have on students in the classroom. Don’t we want our students to be excited to challenge themselves, enthusiastic about learning new things, and perseverant through difficult stages of growth? Heck yes, we do! And growth mindset can help all of those things.

Growth Mindset Classroom

As teachers, we want to think about how we can incorporate growth mindset classroom activities throughout the school year. Back to school season is a perfect time to start, but you can do these activities really any time of year and they will still be very effective.

And luckily, there are a number of very fun ways to weave in these growth mindset for kids activities! Crafts, full-class activities, read alouds, and anchor charts are some of my favorites. You can get a full list of my favorite growth mindset read alouds here.

Here are some engaging and fun activities for growth mindset you can try in your classroom this year! 

Growth Mindset For Kids Activities

1. Fixed Vs. Growth Mindset Anchor Chart

Teaching your students the vocabulary to help them understand a “fixed mindset” versus a “growth mindset” is the perfect place to start. I love that this anchor chart has examples of both kinds of language, so that students get a clear idea of these different ways of thinking.

A fun way to make this a full-class activity is to read the statements out loud and have the students decide which side they should go on.

A great read aloud to pair with this activity is Your Fantastic Elastic Brain.

2. YET Crown

This cute crown comes with an adorable poem printed on it to help remind students that just because they aren’t there yet, doesn’t mean they won’t get there! 

Crowns are always a hit in my classroom! Students will love decorating these fun crowns as they set goals for things they can’t do yet.

3. Growth Mindset Bulletin Board

Creating a growth mindset bulletin board can be a great activity to do with your whole class. You can give them “fixed mindset” statement and let them brainstorm how to flip them into “growth mindset” statements! 

Plus, the bulletin board then serves as a long-term visual reminder for students about the importance of using their growth mindset.

4. Setting Goals Craft

Setting goals is great growth mindset practice for our students. It helps them feel in charge of their learning, and it makes difficulties feel more expected. This craft is great because it reminds your students that not all goals come easy. Sometimes we make goals that will take more time and effort, and that’s okay!

5. YET Anchor Chart

The word “yet” can be so powerful for your students! It’s a great way to flip moments of frustration into positive light. You can make the word “yet” a common phrase in your classroom. Whenever someone is struggling with something, remind them “You just can’t do it yet.” 

This anchor chart helps students brainstorm things that they want to achieve, and adding the word “yet” makes these goals feel far more attainable!

A great read aloud to pair with this activity is The Magical Yet.

6. Flip that Mindset Craft

Help your students practice turning negative thoughts to positive ones with this fun craft. Students paste the “fixed mindset” statements to the gray side of the brain, and then find the flipped statement to paste on the “growth mindset” side of the brain!

7. Positive Messages Fortune Teller

The messages we tell ourselves matter a lot. In fact, a lot of growth mindset activities and books for students are centered around messaging. Are we telling ourselves things from a “fixed mindset” perspective? Or a “growth mindset” perspective?

This fortune teller is full of encouraging growth mindset messages for students to use when they feel stuck. They can do it with a friend, or just use it themselves whenever they need some words of encouragement.

8. Growth Mindset Conversation Dice

This is a fun way to get your students talking and thinking about growth mindset in the classroom. These dice have different questions and conversation starters about growth mindset topics. Put students in pairs or groups and let them chat about these different ideas!

9. Easy or Hard Craft

Sometimes your students forget how much learning they’ve already conquered! Do they remember how long it took them to learn to walk? Or to master their ABCs? And now those things are second nature to them! 

This growth mindset craft helps us look back at things that are now easy, and look forward to things that currently feel hard. But with practice and perseverance, those hard things will one day be easy!

10. Growth Mindset Coloring Pages

These growth mindset coloring sheets are so fun! While I wouldn’t use these just on their own, I do think they would be a great addition to some of these other activities. These would be handy to sprinkle in throughout the year to keep growth mindset phrases fresh and familiar.

Why teach with children’s books? For starters, picture books are one of the best ways to hold our students’ attention. If the storyline and characters are compelling, students won’t just listen, they’ll be invested in the story and the lessons it’s teaching. 

Plus, growth mindset is kind of a dense topic. It’s helpful for students to see it play out with characters in a story. Children’s books about growth mindset can showcase different characters struggling with and learning how to use their growth mindset to achieve their goals. Those types of examples are far more helpful than verbal explanations. 

Finally, students are more likely to remember what we teach when we use children’s books. As they hear the characters’ stories in growth mindset kids books, they relate to those characters. Then later, if they are faced with a similar situation, they’re more likely to remember and use their growth mindset strategies.

Growth Mindset Books For Kids

These books are my top picks for teaching growth mindset for children. Ranging from children to animals to facts to fantasy, these stories will give students a great foundation for what growth mindset is and how they can use it. I've divided these suggestions into five categories, to help you choose what kind of book would be most helpful for what your students need: Growing Pains, Fixed vs. Growth Mindset, Messages To Tell Myself, I Can't Do It YET, and Goal-Setting.

Growing Pains

These growth mindset kids books are all about the growing pains we experience when we try new things. The characters in these books struggle to master something new, and have to learn to persevere and embrace the mistakes they make.

She’s Got This

Zoe is so excited to learn gymnastics after watching it on TV. But when she comes to her first gymnastics class, she discovers that all that flipping and flying is a lot harder than it looks! Zoe has to learn lessons about mistakes, perseverance, and believing in yourself.

The Most Magnificent Thing

Determined to make a magnificent invention, a young girl works hard on creating something using her imagination and whatever materials she can find. But when she’s finished, her invention doesn’t look so magnificent. She has to deal with anger, frustration, and patience before she discovers that maybe she did make something magnificent after all.

Peter wants to whistle for his dog, Willie, but nothing but air comes out of his mouth when he tries. But Peter doesn’t give up – he keeps practicing and practicing, and he’s determined to reach his goal eventually.

The Thing Lou Couldn’t Do

Lou is afraid to try climbing a tree with her friends. She makes excuses and puts it off before finally deciding to face her fears. This story explores ideas of courage, making mistakes, perseverance, and support as we try to learn new things.

Growth Mindset For Kids

Hopefully, you were able to pick some favorite growth mindset books for kids that you’d like to try with your students. There are so many possibilities, so have fun! 

But you don’t have to stop there – there are lots of other ways to weave growth mindset into your classroom. Children’s books are a great place to start, but we can do more to make a growth mindset a permanent part of our teaching.

Classroom activities, anchor chart and bulletin board displays, and crafts can all help in creating a growth mindset classroom environment.
