The search for the perfect back to school teacher outfit usually starts with me looking for the ultimate teacher dress. I love a dress that’s midi-length, but that still feels light and breezy. Our California days are usually sizzling hot during the first weeks of school, so staying cool is so important!

This crisp and simple white dress caught my eye this summer. Therefore, this beauty is definitely one of my top choices for my first day of school outfit this year!

I know some teachers will disagree, but I am a big fan wearing comfy wedges with most of my teacher outfits. And Toms is always my go-to brand of cute wedges. That’s because they have so many choices, and I can wear their shoes comfortably all day long. And we teachers know that having functional shoes is a must!

Skirts For Back to School Teacher Outfits

Teacher skirts are definitely another staple for my teacher outfits! All you need is some cute tank tops in neutral colors to pair with them. And then throwing together a cute back to school teacher outfit is a totally no-brainer.

Midi and maxi skirts are so comfortable, and I love that they can even be paired with a cute t-shirt knotted at the waist. I found this skirt on Amazon, and I fell in love with this gorgeous teal color. Another amazing thing about pleated skirts is that you don’t have to iron them! Hallelujah!

Usually, I like to wear my skirts with cute sneakers or flat sandals. In fact, it seems like sneakers and skirt trend was made for teachers, because who doesn’t want a teacher outfit that’s totally comfortable? In this outfit, I went for some basic metallic slip on sandals. I have a big thing for metallic shoes, because gold is basically a neutral, right?

And it’s probably because they are one of the easiest teacher outfit ideas! One-piece items just make it so much easier to get dressed when you’re trying out rush out the door in the morning.

This jumpsuit is from Amazon, and it would make such a cute back to school teacher outfit. I love the color and how light it feels. Plus it has the best surprise… pockets! In this photo, I paired it with some cute Toms flats. I always keep one or two colors of these shoes in my teacher wardrobe, because they go with so many teacher outfits. Wearing jeans and a comfy teacher T can be really tempting when you’re having trouble nailing that first day of school teacher outfit. Well, here’s an instant upgrade if you just want to keep things simple.

First, start with a pair of white jeans for a more polished look. Next, pair that with a cute blouse, and you’ve got yourself a fool-proof back to school teacher outfit! I think wearing wedges brings the outfit up another notch, but flats would also be totally cute.

Recently, I fell in love with these white jeans from Old Navy. The cut is so flattering, and they have made their way into many of my teacher outfits. I also love the embroidery detail they have at the bottom. White jeans go with everything, so it's always good to have one or two pairs on hand! I often get the question of where to shop for teacher clothes. I definitely have a few places that I consistently come back to again and again for the best teacher outfits.

If you want to go out and shop yourself for the perfect back to school teacher outfit, here is my list of places that I continually find great teacher clothes:

Old Navy: I love that they are super affordable, but their quality feels like it will actually last more than one year. This is my go-to for teacher jeans and teacher jumpsuits.

Nordstrom Rack: I adore Nordstrom, but I don’t want to break the bank on clothes that I wear mostly just to the classroom. Nordstrom Rack is the answer! I especially love the skirts and dresses I can find at Nordstrom Rack!

Loft: Loft has amazing clothes that are perfect for teaching. Every time I walk in, I see so many things I want. They can be pricy, but Loft has amazing sales, so I always wait until what I’m looking for goes on sale, and I get it then. I especially love their blouses and dresses!

Target: Of course we can’t forget Target in a list of teacher essentials! I love Target for headbands, earrings, and accessories. They are also great for clothing basics, like neutral tank tops and t-shirt dresses.

Here are some of my favorite items I snagged in the Loft sale! I listed the prices that I got them at. I recommend putting items you want in your cart and then waiting a while to see if they go on sale!

These shorts are the perfect length! I was looking for shorts that were long enough to wear to school but that still felt stylish. The are very flattering with the tie waist, and also have big pockets which we teachers know is always a plus! I also was looking for white shirts that would match all of my shorts and skirts. These are both cute options.

How cute is this white blouse? I love the puff sleeves so much! It really pairs with any skirt to make it into an easy outfit. These skirts are both perfect for school. Not too long, not too short. It's hard to find denim skirts that are modest enough for teaching, but this one is great!

It's always hard for me to find fall and winter dresses. These two will both transition easily into the colder weather with just a sweater and some tights. Definitely worth holding onto! I was also looking for a lighter colored woven belt… bingo!

I've been trying to add more dangling earrings into my outfits (I'm usually a no-fuss studs girl). These earrings are simple enough to pair with most outfits, but also not boring. I am keeping them all!

I've been trying to hop on the top knot headband trend for ages, and I finally found one I like! The crinkle fabric on this pink headband is so pretty. I use headbands all the time for easy hair days, and these will all get a lot of wear!

But whenever I go to Target, I can’t help but wander through their clothing aisles and end up with a handful (or sometimes an armful) of cute items. I definitely am not comfortable going into fitting rooms right now, which means I end up buying a bunch of stuff to take home and try on (after letting it sit for three days so the germs can die)! 

After several trips to Target, I finally feel like I have a summer wardrobe happening (months of sheltering-in-place meant clothing shopping was mostly leggings and sweatshirts)! So many of these items are versatile enough to wear in or out of the classroom. But mostly they are just great casual summer staples. And I can keep them all because Target's prices are so affordable!

Here are my favorites:

• Overalls: These overalls are so fun and comfy. They are super stretchy, which is must in my book, and the pockets are actually functional! I could see myself wearing these to school with a puff sleeve blouse and some high-top slip-on sneakers. These overalls run big, so I sized down.

• Tie-Dye Sweatshirt: I have to admit, I am loving the tie-dye trend. I was so excited to find this sweatshirt and even more excited that the fit was so nice. I went one size up so that it would be a little loose. The colors are so summery, I just love them!
• White Cut-Off Shorts: These white Levi shorts might be my favorite item I found. They are the perfect short-shorts – flattering, but still trendy. I love the distressed look. I definitely won't be wearing these to school, but I they will still get plenty of use this summer! Levi's run small, so order up if you're between sizes.

• T-Shirt Dress: I've been wanting to add a T-shirt dress to my wardrobe, and this one is the winner! I love the muted teal, and the slightly loose fit, and the just-right length. I can't wait to style it with a jean jacket, baseball cap, and flip-flops! Runs big, so go down if between sizes.

• The Perfect White T: I've been on the search for the perfect white T, and I finally found it! I wanted an oversized fit with a crewneck. This shirt is just the right sturdiness. I went two sizes up to get the perfect oversized feel. Did I mention it's only $9? I'll probably have to go back for more!!
• Just-Right Shorts: It's so hard to find shorts that aren't too short to wear to work. These are pushing it, but I think I could get away with wearing these to school if I paired them with a nice blouse and some sensible flats. But they may just end up being summer shorts. The color is great because it's so neutral it goes with everything!

This summer, I've been all about mixing and matching these sets to create new outfits, and I have to say it is so much fun! It's a great way to get lots of use out of a single outfit, and it's also a fun way to mix and match with different prints and fabrics.

This top is from a set I bought from Gal Meets Glam last summer that I've been using in lots of different outfits this summer. One way I loved using it is with denim. This would also look super cute with some cut off jean shorts.

The skirt from the set is a neutral color, so it works with pretty much any crop top. Here I paired it with a high neck crop top.

Pleated skirts are one of my favorite styles right now, and this one is so bright and fun. It pairs perfectly with the top from my two piece dress set. Honestly this top would go with almost any midi skirt, it's so versatile.

Here are some more two piece sets I am hoping to get my hands on! The mix and match possibilities are endless!

We took a little outing over the weekend to celebrate the warm weather and to try to get out of the house. We drove over to a nearby field. Our original plan was to have a little picnic, but it was sooo hot outside, we decided to just bring some ice cream bars and spend a shorter time there. Our picnic idea will have to wait til this stretch of 90 degree weather is over!

I'm a big fan of the overall trend, so I through on my newish skirtall that has so far only been worn with turtleneck sweaters and tights layered underneath. Turns out I like it even better as a sun dress layered with a white tank!

But this weekend, we were feeling adventurous! Armed with our masks, purell wipes, and gloves, we made the twenty minute walk to our downtown area. We hit the bakery first, getting a bag of croissants to share later (chocolate croissants are hands down my favorite pastry… although I also grabbed a hazelnut croissant to try out as well). Then we headed to Starbucks to pick up my all-time favorite beverage, their iced green tea (a perfect balance of citrus and minty flavors… yum! I'm sipping the leftovers of it right now as I write this post)!

It's interesting, because at the beginning of the quarantine, I was terrified to go anywhere. The grocery store was a scary place, and I didn't feel safe with all those people touching everything I was about to touch. But our little outing yesterday felt just fine! Yes it was a hassle to disinfect my Starbucks cup, grapple with my mask and ponytail, and make sure I had a clean glove at the right time. But the stores were practically empty, and they had a well thought out system with very minimal interaction. Sure, I threw all my clothes into the laundry and scrubbed myself off in the shower the moment I got home, but it made me hopeful that society will find a way to continue life, even with these strange new conditions.

The weather is starting to warm up, which means we are almost to my favorite time of year… summer! I know many would disagree, but I love love love the heat. I was thrilled to pull out shorts and a tank for our walk, and couldn't help but pair some blue and purple pastels for a happy, fun look. I actually got this tank on Amazon, and while I wasn't sure about it at first, it's become one of my favorite workout tops. I love how loose and long it is. And you can knot it if you want a cropped top.

So I would call our adventure a success! And we now have some delicious croissants in our freezer waiting to be eaten!

One item that I wasn't sure I would like when I got it was this lounge jumpsuit. I'm so glad I decided to purchase it. It's one of my go-to items when I'm done for the day or getting ready to relax with a movie. The one I have is old from Zella at Nordstrom, but I found some similar ones available.

Crop sweatshirts are certainly having a moment right now. There are so many fun colors of these out there, and they are so cute paired with high-waisted leggings and sweatpants. I bought this purple one, but I have a feeling I'll be going back to find some more soon!

I have definitely been enjoying being able to wear leggings and sweatpants every day while working at home. I’ll throw on a nice blouse for Zoom meetings, and make sure my hair and makeup is done. I can hear some people asking: Hair and makeup? Why bother? Well, I did my hair and makeup every day when I was teaching in the classroom, and if my appearance is one teeny tiny thing that I can make consistent for my students during this crazy time, then it’s worth it. Here are some Zoom shots of some typical outfits I’ve been wearing. (Just picture leggings or sweatpants on the bottom half!)

With warmer weather starting up, I’ve also been pulling out some of my summer dresses. Turns out this is a super comfy option that looks professional on top with no extra effort! Here are some of the dress styles I’m loving for days with stacked Zoom meetings.

You know that feeling when you go out for yard duty and realize you were so so unprepared for how cold it is outside?

I have spent many a morning recess thinking “I should have worn that extra sweater!” or “Why did I think I would be fine without long underwear?”

I have concocted many crazy ideas to help warm up on the chilliest of mornings. I actually have an electric heat pullover that I wear under my sweaters on super cold mornings. In fact, I should probably do a post that lists all of my hacks for staying warm during 8 am yard duty.

So how can you dress when you know you'll be in and out of the classroom, and that the temperatures will be all over the place? You need an outfit that can adapt with you for those days that start out freezing, but somehow warm up 30 degrees by the end of the day.

And for those of us who live in Northern California, those days seem to last most of the school year!

I've found that layering is really the only way I can stay comfortable all day. Being warm is very very important, so I like to add in a proper coat and a hat most chilly mornings. But once the classroom warms up and I get going with the teaching, I start shedding layers!

Bye bye coat. There goes the hat. See ya sweater.

Layering options help me maintain that “just right” temperature all day long, and let me feel prepared for just about anything the weather might throw my way!

Outfit Breakdown

Here I went with….

• Grey peacoat (My JCrew Factory one sold out, but it's based off of this gorgeous JCrew Chateau Parka)

• White jeans (a staple for me year round. I like these H&M ones because they are so affordable, I have several pairs I rotate through)

• Striped turtleneck, becuase let's be honest, I consider blue and white stripes a “neutral” (similar here)

• Cozy sweater vest – I was so so excited about this item. I wasn't sure I would wear it a lot, but I've ended up getting so much use out of it! (similar here)

• Knitted hat – this one has a cute pointelle pattern so it's not as chunky and overstated as other winter hats which can be nice (similar here)

• Lace up boots, which are another wardrobe stable, as these are actually comfortable and have that perfect not too high, not too low heel. These are from Anthropologie (similar here)

I love pairing neutrals with more neutrals, and putting together different fabric textures. I also love how the sweater vest sticks out under the coat – if you're going to layer, show it off! Then off come the layers, and you're ready for whatever temps the day decides to throw at you!
